By Dominique Swanson—This past weekend the Morningside College Residence Life Team held their annual group process day to interview potential Resident Assistants (RAs).
With 50 positions possible and nearly 28 returning staff, this year turned out to be a record-breaking year with nearly 100 applicants in total.
RAs play an important role on campus ensuring each student has a comfortable, safe, and fun living environment while living on-campus. Andrew Pflipsen, the Dean of Students, takes his role of conducting this process very seriously.
Applicants undergo a multistep process starting with an intensive application and then being invited to Group Process Day. On this day, all returning staff and appointed college staff conduct a vigorous interview process beginning with two supervised group activities.
Once the group activities are completed, each applicant undergoes an individual interview conducted by two returning RAs and one college staff person. Each interviewer completes a list of comments with a letter grade summing up their decision.
This is a competitive and intensive process where only the very best are chosen to be on staff.
Sarah Yankowski, a two-year RA and Head Resident applicant commented, “This year was a strong year for applicants, and unfortunately there will be many good candidates that will be disappointed.”
This next week will be an edgy one, as all of the candidates anxiously await news on either their success or failure in applying to be an RA. Applicants are to be informed by February 6th if not sooner.
