By Dominique Swanson—Musicals tend to be a delicate art that require just the right amount of plot intricately intertwined with songs that explain what is going on. Creators of musicals must be careful to find the proper balance in order to create a successful show.
In the case of ‘Into the Woods’ the creators did not find that balance. This movie was too drawn out and left you squirming for it to be over.
This is a show that seemed perfect to bring the whole family to, but there were many scenes that seemed inappropriate for children.
If you are not a musical lover to begin with, this is definitely not the film for you. If you fall somewhere in the middle, as I do, I still do not recommend it. It you are a die-hard fan of all that is musical, then this 125-minute movie may be right up your alley.
From the start it is obvious that this is another spin on fairy tale classics. The movie starts off fun and intriguing, shining a new light on the classic tales. As it continues you begin waiting for the climax. And let me tell you, you will wait, and wait, and wait, and wait a little more. Once it finally hits the point where you think it will all come together, things take a twist for the worse again.
If this story had ended at the first point where everything felt resolved and neatly summed together, I would have called it charming and pleasant. This was not the case though.
As it was, it was too drawn out and a far reach to be different. There were many unnecessary scenes in the end that just made you ask “why?”
This is not a movie that comes highly recommended in my book, but on a boring night with nothing else to watch, it would not be the worst thing you could watch.
