Two cars stolen from Morningside lots

By Darius Hicks–Thefts on the Morningside College campus usually are of the laptop, computer, backpack or iPad variety. Now add automobiles to the list.

Two car parked in campus lots were reported stolen the weekend of Sept. 28. A handful of others were vandalized.

Sunday morning Assistant Director of Security Brett Lyon received a call reporting a red 2001 Mercury Mountaineer stolen from the Plex lot.

“Car break-ins are usually very common on college campuses, but for one to be stolen it’s almost unheard of,” Lyon said.

He received a second phone call that evening when reports of a silver 1989 ford tempo had been taken from the Waitt/Poppen apartment lots.

“I was very surprised, two stolen cars in one night. I honestly thought someone was playing a joke on me,” Lyon said.

Lyon insists that many of these problems can be prevented if students take extra precaution before leaving their vehicles. “Thieves are looking for easy ways to make money. Be sure to remove your keys from your vehicle, along with any valuables and always remember to lock your doors.”

Students are advised to contact Campus Security or the Sioux City Police Department if they have any information regarding these crimes.

“It takes a village to prevent crime, it’s not just one person’s problem, it’s everyone’s. So if you hear anything, help us help you,” Lyon said.
