By Lauren Sorenson– It’s difficult to find things to do in a smaller city, especially when your funds are limited. But, with a little looking, you can always find something entertaining to do in Sioux-town.
1) Rock wall climbing– The Long Lines Family Recreation Center offers climbing walls for every climber. The Center’s walls range from 13 foot boulders to a 5,900 square foot climbing space. For $7 you can climb as much as you want for 2 hours.
2) Visit a hotel– Hotels that have a sauna, hot tub, and swimming pool usually let visitors use the facilities for a small fee. All you need to do is talk to the front desk and they will let you know about their policy.
3) MidAmerica Museum of Aviation and Transportation– This museum takes a look at the history of the Sioux City area aviation and transportation world. This 30,000 square foot museum is home to a ’41 Cadillac Fleetwood that was used by President Truman in Omaha and a 1913 Road Grader.
4) Mechanical Bull at Mac Behr’s– Hold on tight! If you’re over 21, stop by Mac Behr’s to try out the mechanical bull. If riding the bull isn’t your thing, then stop by to watch other people try their best. Either way, it will be an amusing night.
5) Live Music– If you’re in the mood for some live music consider stopping by Indigo Palette, Chesterfields, or Rhonda’s Speak Easy. Each location offers a wide variety of music. Bands vary by night, so check out there websites beforehand to see what they will be offering.
6) Take a Date to the Riveria– The Riviera Theatre, which is located next to the Sioux City Convention Center, displays movies after they have left regular theaters. Seating is generally very open. Tickets cost only $3.50 a piece.
7) Laser Tag– Combat Live is located in the Southern Hills Mall. Laser tag is a great workout and such an adrenaline rush. One of the perks of playing laser tag is that you won’t need to search for a bunch of people to bring. If you can’t find anyone who wants to play, they will put you in a group. If you’re on a budget you can play for 15 minutes for $6.
8) Go to Palmer’s Candy– Do you have a sweet tooth? Try out a local Sioux City favorite: the Twin Bing. While you’re venturing around Palmer’s Candy Company take a minute to learn a little about the history of the shop.
9) Visit the Ice Cream Capital of the World– It’s just a short 25-minute drive to Le Mars, Iowa. Le Mars has been home to Blue Bunny Ice Cream since 1913. More ice cream is produced in Le Mars than any other city in the world. Johanna Munoz said.
“My friends and I will drive down to Le Mars when we’re bored some times. The drive isn’t that bad but, the ice cream is great and the atmosphere is cool.” The ice cream is sold in a 1920’s- style parlor. After you’ve enjoyed your ice cream you can tour the Visiting Center and learn the history of ice cream and Wells’ Dairy.
10) Edgar’s Old Fashioned Soda Fountain– Visit Elk Point for an old- style experience. The fountain appeared in 1906 in Centerville, SD. After being out of service for almost 20 years, the owners of Pioneer Drug restored the fountain. Enjoy the vintage looking parlor and try the homemade ice cream. It’s worth the experience!
