5 things to do in Sioux City …For FREE

By Lauren Sorenson–Sioux City has a rich history and is home to a number of museums and historical sites. If you’re looking for something to do and you’re tight on money, try one of
these places:

1. Art Center– The Sioux City Art Centers bestows Sioux City with exhibits of local, national, and international artists. Currently, the Art Center is cooperating with art teachers from the Sioux City Community Schools. The series presents work from elementary, middle, and high school students. The Sioux City Camera Club will also have works on display. The theme the Club is discovering is “quiet.”

2. War Eagle– The War Eagle monument sits on top of a bluff that overlooks a split in the Missouri River. Wambdi Okicize was also known as War Eagle, but interestingly he was a supporter of peace. His daughters and grandchildren were all buried with him on the bluff. The monument gives visitors a great scenic view of the river.

Johanna Munoz, a Sioux City local, gives one piece of advice, “Be wary of what you
bring with you to the monument. The wind is so powerful at some points, that you
could easily lose a hat or whatever you’re holding in your hands.”

3. First Bride’s Grave– If you plan on going to the First Bride’s Grave be prepared for a walk. The walk is short, but beware it is steep. A bench is located almost half way up the trail for those who need a break. The path is fairly well shaded by trees, until you reach the top of the bluff. Trees enclose the gravesite, so the best view of the river comes immediately after the climb up the hill.

4. Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center – The Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center is a 10-acre site, in Stone State Park. The Nature Center is home to a variety of exhibits, including a 400-gallon aquarium of native fish, a butterfly and wildflower garden.

5. Disc Golf- When the weather warms up get your Frisbees out. Sertoma Park, near Southern Hills Applebee’s, offers a 2,844-foot disc golf course. There are 9 holes throughout the park that curve around the Water Tower. There are challenging narrow fairways, and several holes are surrounded by woody areas, so make sure you’re wearing sneakers.photo(1)
