Honors Society cashes in on Morningside squirrels

by Claire DeRoin–

They are everywhere on campus. They shamelessly eat ice cream cones off the ground. They disturb classes by sitting in front of windows and peering in with disregard for education. They stare intensely at you when you walk past them.  Now they are on t-shirts.
Who are “they?”

The Morningside squirrels.

OKD (Omicron Delta Kappa), Morningside’s honors society, held the squirrel shirt fundraiser in September. Over 150 students and faculty ordered shirts.

A Facebook group served as the order form. “I originally added all of my Morningside Facebook friends, and it was up to them to invite their Facebook friends, and so on,” said Marissa Gregg, who is a member of the ODK fundraising committee.

So why are the squirrels starring on the shirts?

“Students here love Morningside’s friendly squirrels,” said Gregg. “I had seen an image on the internet of a squirrel unzipping its fur to reveal a Superman ‘S,’ so I wanted to do the same thing with the Morningside ‘M.’” Gregg’s sister, a graphic designer based out of Sioux Falls, designed the shirts. Four colors were available.

Gregg expects to see the Morningside squirrel shirts on campus within a month.

Money raised from squirrel shirt sales will go towards various ODK events, including Into the Streets, Dean’s List receptions, Honors Convocation, and the Faculty Appreciation Dinner.
