Student directors show their skills

By Tasha Drey ~
The Morningside College Theater directing class presented one act plays Saturday, April 28, in the Klinger- Neal Theater. The class is taught by Bette Skewis Arnett and has 5 students. The class consists of both juniors and seniors.

Each student chose a short One Act show in which they each casted and directed. The student directors and the shows they presented were:  Labor Pains directed by Mandy Suing, Guys directed by Kyle Bubb, Eye to Eye directed by Cristina McCrystal, Window of Opportunity directed by Maddie Mardesen, and Courting Prometheus directed by Peter Swanke. Each show lasted only about ten to fifteen minutes and was filled with laughter.

Director Maddie Mardesen said, “I really enjoyed my first directing experience with Play Production. At the start of the class I was really nervous about being in charge of everything. But after a few rehearsals, I realized how much fun it can be.”

The students had been working all semester on their one acts and had been working with their actors for the past month.

“It was great to work with actors and really create a show that I wanted and envisioned in my head instead of what someone else wanted me to create,” added Mardesen. Mardesen also said it feels good to have the process completed and that it will be a great accomplishment to add to her resume someday.

As for ever directing again, “If the opportunity arises, I would definitely consider directing again”.
