Mustangs Clinch Second Place in GPAC Standings

By Andrew Schnebel ~The Morningside Mustangs baseball team took on Briar Cliff Saturday afternoon at Lewis and Clark Park. The cross-town rivalry was the second time the two teams met up. The Mustangs won the first meeting back in March.

Morningside’s Storm Throne was outstanding in the first game, hurling a complete game three-hitter in a 3-1 Mustang triumph. The Mustangs took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Trevor Miller scored on a throwing error by the first baseman. They pushed across another run in the third inning and that would be enough for Throne to defeat the Chargers.

The nightcap of the double header was a different story for the Mustangs, however. Briar Cliff starter Shaun McPeters limited the Mustangs to five hits. The Mustangs got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. But that wasn’t enough to pull off the victory as the Mustangs fell 6-2.

Junior Pitcher Bobby Lee “It wasn’t our best baseball that we played on the year. We’re hoping to bounce back with conference finals tournament starting next weekend.”

The GPAC conference tournament begins Thursday in Lincoln, Nebraska. The Mustangs will take on Mount Marty Thursday morning at 9am at Sherman Field.
