Sioux City is hopeful in the “Blue Zone”

By Brittany Conolly~
Sioux City is in the running to become a Blue Zone. With students from Morningside lending a helping hand, Sioux City could become one of the top ten communities to become one of the nationwide Blue Zones.

In 2011 Governor Terry Branstad called to action a plan for a healthier Iowa. This was named The Healthy State Initiative.

Morningside needs to be aware of what Blue Zone can do for a community. The resident health care professional, Carol Garvey, wants students to get involved. “First of all, students need to CARE about the health of all communities but especially their own community, Morningside College, and care enough about themselves.” Not only should Morningside, as a small community, become healthy but Sioux City should participate.

Carol suggests, “Exercise and healthier habits regarding stress, nutrition, sleep, personal safety, emotional and social health all create happier more positive people and that will lift up the entire community over time.”

These reasons alone should ensure someone to become a healthier, happier person. Students and people in the community can make Sioux City a better place, but most importantly themselves healthier. As Garvey puts it, “We are already a friendly midwest community but this will make people feel better about themselves and others if they are willing to “play” and participate.”
