By Lynx Gregoire – The Mustang’s goal going into this upcoming football game/season is to stay ahead. Last season, the Stangs went 12-2, having lost their first game to Benedictine College and a playoff game right before the National Championship. In between, they went on a 12 game win streak, showcasing their skills and talents. Zack Chevalier (Sha/vahl/yay) senior starting quarterback (QB), states that “last year’s Benedictine game taught us a lot about ourselves, it taught us that we are a resilient team.” In last year’s game, the Mustangs were down 28-3 and fought all the way back but fell short at the one-yard line.
Malik Hampton, three-year starting defensive back (DB) for the Mustangs states that “last year we started out flat and [that] put us in the predicament that we were in,” but like Chevalier, Malik states that they stayed resilient and that was the biggest lesson that Benedictine taught them. The Stangs have a young group of players on defense that have not been part of a lot of big games. The goal for defense is to start off fast and play every possession like it’s their last, and that will lead them to a win.
“We’ve put too much work in to come away with a loss. We will not make the same mistakes as last year” Hampton states. There is a different sense of urgency for these guys. Fans can hear the hunger in their voices and will see it on the field this Saturday. “I’ve stopped and smelled the roses and took time to appreciate the situation God has put me in. But it is going to make me walk into each one of these games with a chip on my shoulder, to get it, not just for me but for my brothers fighting beside me”, states Zack. The National Championship is the final goal for these Mustangs, but Benedictine is the first step.
Tune in this Saturday to watch the last ride for these seniors and watch them give it their all. They will leave their mark some way, somehow. #ROLLSTANGS
