Women’s Soccer Wins Season Opener

By – Keyara Harmon On August 27, Morningside women’s soccer team started the season in style, with a commanding 4-0 victory against SMSU, setting the tone for what looks to be a promising year. Junior Emma Feigl said the win not only boosted the team’s confidence but also brought them  closer together. Junior Lilou Dominguez added that shutting out a fierce Division II opponent made the victory even more remarkable. She said the team feels positively about the season because of the team’s outstanding performance.

Key to the team’s victory was their offense, which wasted no time finding the back of the net with the first goal coming in the 6th minute. Feigl pointed out that two of the goals were scored off headers-that is, scored by players using their head to hit the ball into the opposing goal-something the team has been looking to capitalize on this year. She credits the forwards and midfielders for making the right runs and coming into the match with a goal driven mindset, which paid off with four goals.

The defense played with equal energy, keeping their opponent scoreless the entire time. Dominguez complimented the back line for keeping consistency in their marking, and playing aggressively to win balls, especially out of the air. She also emphasized how the defenders maintained their composure to help secure the shutout and were a dependable drop option for the midfield. The Mustangs had a perfect start to the season thanks to a balanced attack and a strong defense.
