By Jaden Carney – Ways students can gain leadership experience on campus are to become members of the Welcome Orientation Organizers, otherwise known as the infamous WOO Crew, or to get involved as Peer Mentors.
WOO Crew Members are required to meet students and establish initial communication with them. Tasha Goodvin, Associate Vice President for Marketing and Communication, oversees the WOO Crew. She said that initial communication is so students can find someone to relate to.
Goodvin said students who are interested in leadership experience and have a passion for Morningside should apply. The application for WOO Crew came out Sunday, Feb. 2. Applications will be due Friday, February 7. Students can expect to be interviewed and determine their status of acceptance of the group by spring break.
Peer Mentors, a new leadership team of undergraduate students at Morningside, will also be seeking candidates. Peer Mentors, who started as advisors meant for XPath Students, were expanded to every freshman in the incoming freshman class.
Peer Mentors are a group of upper-classmen of Sophomores – Seniors. Peer Mentors are there to establish connections with students, help students get acclimated to campus, answer any questions students may have, host study nights, and much more!
Katie Koithan, the Student Experience & Retention Coordinator, said students who have a willingness to help and make meaningful connections with students are encouraged to apply for the positions. Koithan echoed that students interested in leadership experience are also encouraged to apply. Koithan said anyone from any major/discipline and athletic group is encouraged to apply, including more male applicants.
All student leadership positions are good for building resumes and helping in efforts to make students feel at home at Morningside. Students who have questions should reach Tasha Goodvin at goodvint@morningside.edu or Katie Koithan at roskiek@morningside.edu.
