Honoring the Legacy of Jimmy Aschenbrenner

By Jesus Jimenez — This past weekend, the Morningside Men’s Volleyball program hosted its annual alumni scrimmage and this year’s event carried an emotional weight as it also served as a retirement ceremony honoring Jimmy Aschenbrenner.

Jimmy, a cherished member of the Morningside volleyball family, passed away this past June after a courageous battle with cancer. The day brought together alumni, coaches, and fans to celebrate his legacy and the profound impact he had on the team and community.

The ceremony began with a heartfelt speech from Coach Noah, who spoke about Aschenbrenner’s unwavering commitment to the program and his teammates. “Jimmy was the definition of family,” Coach Noah said, his voice filled with emotion. “His leadership, kindness, and passion for the game left a mark that will never fade.”

A former teammate of Aschenbrenner also shared his memories, painting a picture of a man who embodied selflessness, dedication, and love for his sport and teammates. Many of Jimmy’s former teammates made the trip to participate in the scrimmage and pay tribute to a man who had meant so much to them.

The highlight of the event was the presence of Aschenbrenner’s parents, who flew in to honor their son. They spoke on his behalf, thanking the Morningside volleyball community for the love and support they had shown Aschenbrenner throughout his life, especially during his battle with cancer. Their words brought tears to many in the gym, reminding everyone of the strong bond that exists within the Morningside volleyball family.

The scrimmage became more than just a game—it was a tribute to Jimmy’s spirit. Every serve, every rally, and every point seemed to carry the energy and enthusiasm that Aschenbrenner brought to the court. The alumni played with the same passion that Aschenbrenner was known for, making the day a true celebration of his legacy.

Rest in peace, Jimmy. Your impact on the Morningside Men’s Volleyball family will never be forgotten.

  1. The Aschenbrenner family would once again like to thank Morningside University, Coach Noah, Braden Hall, and ALL of Jimmy’s teammates, friends, teachers, and family that made the trip out to Morningside to participate in this great honor for Jimmy. We are truly touched by the outpouring of love for Jimmy, and the support for us, his family, as we navigate life moving forward without him physically here. We know he touched so many during his time at Morningside, and he will be with us always.
    Thank you all!!!

  2. It is so heartwarming to know that that his Morningside family of friends and teammates loved and admired Jimmy so much that they did the him the honor of retiring his number. He has left a big hole in the hearts of all of his family and friends here in Colorado too. He is sorely missed.
