By Dayne Davis–Morningside put on a clinic as Zack Chevalier led his team to a dominating 52-7 victory over the Hastings University Broncos. Chevalier was awarded GPAC Offensive player of the week with his performance of 441 passing yards and four touchdowns.
They are now own a 5-0 GPAC record.
The Mustangs came out and threw the first punch as Drew Sellon, NAIA receiving yards leader, caught a 23-yard touchdown strike from Chevalier. The Broncos punched back, scoring less than a minute later, but that would be the last glimpse of promise for them.
Morningside tacked on another 21 unanswered points in the second quarter. Chevalier was giving out touchdowns like Halloween candy as junior Lennx Brown and freshman Nolan Feller joined in with receiving touchdowns before half. Sellon also delivered a second TD of 57-yards before half on the receiving end of a strike from Chevalier.
Meanwhile, on the defensive side Isaac Pingel led the way. Pingel recorded 10 total tackles and 1.5 sacks in a consecutive dominating performance since being awarded GPAC Defensive Player of the Week just a week prior. Following the early Hastings touchdown, the Broncos were forced to punt 10 out of their next 11 drives.
The Mustangs defense ultimately held the Broncos to just 159 total yards of offense.
Morningside went into halftime with a strong 28-7 lead, but the fun wouldn’t stop there. Early in the third quarter, Laken Harnly returned a punt to the house going for 73 yards. Harnly’s performance earned him GPAC Special Teams Player of the Week.
Freshman kicker Tommy Fitzsimmons also had a busy day as he recorded 10 points for the Mustangs. Fitzsimmons added his last point to the scoring column following a 50-yard rushing touchdown by Nolan Feller. Feller would end the game with two TDs and 70 rushing/receiving yards.
The running back room stepped up major pending the return of star running back Ryan Cole as Max Hough also added 119 yards on the ground and a touchdown.
Lennx Brown followed Sellon’s 226 yards and two TD performance with a TD of his own and 107 yards.
The Mustangs will be back at Olsen Stadium this upcoming Saturday (October 19, 2024) hosting cross-town rival Briar Cliff University. The battle for the saddle begins at 1 pm.
