By Gabriel Ruiz-Morningside University’s annual Homecoming concert will be taking place Friday, October 11. It will showcase performances by the Morningside Choir, Wind Ensemble, and M Avenue Jazz, offering a rich selection of music that highlights the musical prowess and dedication of the university’s music department. The concert coincides with the CODA (Culmination of Outstanding and Distinguished Achievement) Awards, which honor distinguished alumni and faculty for their exceptional contributions to Music, Art, and Theatre.
The CODA Awards were initiated seven years ago by Dr. Person, upon his arrival at Morningside University. He envisioned these awards as a way to recognize and celebrate the university’s many alumni who have achieved significant careers in the arts. With a committee gathering in the spring and summer each year, following a nomination process, to select one outstanding individual in the categories of Art, Music, and Theatre.
In previous years, the honorees were celebrated during a luncheon. However, last year, the awards ceremony was moved to the Homecoming Premiere Performance, providing a more fitting venue for the honorees to witness the remarkable talent fostered at Morningside. In addition to the concert, Cantabile and Camerata are collaborating with Campus Ministry and Grace United Methodist Church to offer a morning worship service the following Sunday at Eppley Auditorium. This service provides a reflective closure to the Homecoming weekend, celebrating the artistic community here on campus.
The Homecoming concert and the CODA Awards are and continue to be a hallmark of Morningside University’s celebration of artistic achievement, making it an unmissable event for students, faculty, and the broader college community.
