2024 graduates will not receive hoods

by Maren Ewertz–Traditionally, Morningside University graduates received an academic hood at graduation. This hood was white with a maroon chevron pointing upwards. This design originated around 1963.

Looking in the Sioux, Morningside’s yearbook that ran from 1901-2004, students appear to wear the hoods we know today in 1963, but not in 1962.

As the years went by, Morningside College graduates were given their caps, gowns, and academic hoods to wear to the graduation ceremony. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19, Morningside had to stop giving out the hoods.

Last year, the graduating class of 2023 got hoods for the first time since Covid. Students thought this would mark the return of the iconic Morningside University regalia. However, many students were saddened to hear that this was a one time thing. This year’s graduating class, the class of 2024, will not be getting hoods. The future classes will also not be getting the iconic attire.

Many students think this is due to budget cuts, others think it is due to everything taking too long on graduation day.

Daisy Ortiz and several other education majors graduating this year asked about the upcoming graduation and why they hadn’t received their hoods. Morningside’s bookstore has stated that the reasoning behind this sudden change is that no other university or colleges do hoods.

After talking with a couple of seniors about this issue, the general consensus was that they were all looking forward to their hoods in particular. Many had stated that they had already not had a proper high school graduation due to Covid, and now they feel as though they are not getting the proper university graduation either.
