by Chaise Pfanstiel–The Mustangs women’s basketball squad opened the season with two big wins at the Coyote Classic in Salina, Kansas, Nov. 3-4.
On Friday the Mustangs took on Kansas Wesleyan and snuck out a win with a final score of 75-74. Senior shooting guard Alexis Spier led the team, scoring 27 points and nine rebounds. Spier made a field goal and was fouled with 33 seconds left on the clock and went to the free throw line and made her one free throw opportunity to put the Mustangs up by one and solidify the win.
“It would have been easy to put our heads down the first game since it wasn’t going the way we wanted, but we didn’t. We came together as a team, and we kept fighting until the very last second and got the win. Then getting up the next day after coming off a pretty intense game, we completed hard, and were able to secure our second win of the season,” Spier said.
Chloe Loftstom made history against Wesleyan, surpassing 1,000 career points. Senior, Chaise Pfanstiel had 15 points on the game, seven assists, and four rebounds to help the Mustangs get the win. The Mustangs got the win but were right back at it at noon the next day.
Saturday Morningside grabbed a 71-48 win over Bethany College. The Mustangs started out slow, ending the first quarter 17-17, but they picked it up after that. The women pulled away in the second quarter, outscoring the Swedes 22-3 and taking a 39-20 lead into intermission.
Lily Vollertsen came off the bench to tally 14 points and eight rebounds to lead the Mustangs to the win. Sophomore Jordyn Carr also came off the bench for the Mustangs and added 10 points. All 16 Morningside players saw the floor Saturday afternoon to help get the win.
The Mustangs have not started out 2-0 since the 2019-2020 season. The ladies will play their third game in five days on Tuesday, Nov. 7, when they travel to Grand View in Des Moines, IA. The game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start.
