In Equalizer 3, Robert McCall (Denzel) travels to Sicily in search of the man who stole something. Before we see McCall on screen, the camera follows an older man with a young boy pulling up into the driveway of a large Vineyard. Bodies are sprawled everywhere. The older man tells the young boy to stay in the car and enters the house. More bodies are laid out all over the house. (I wonder who could have done it?) After a long list of dead bodies, the man finally enters a room where we see McCall sitting in a chair with three men pointing a gun at him. However, if you’ve seen the previous movies, you’re not worried in the slightest.
The plot of E3 takes a turn when McCall discovers the men he killed n the movie’s opening scene are the part of the Italian mafia. Dakota Fanning plays an FBI detective on a mission to shut down said mafia, and she and McCall team up to take them down.
Actor and producer Denzel Washington ends his role as Robert McCall in the final movie of the Equalizer trilogy. Washington has won numerous awards throughout his career as an actor. He is a three time Golden Globe Award winner, a two time Academy Award winner, and a Tony Award winner. Washington also received multiple nominations for his role in the trilogy.
I was eager to see Fanning and Washington collaborate again, as they were the main characters in the movie Man on Fire. Dakota Fanning was only ten years-old in the 2004 film, but I enjoyed her character much more than I did in Equalizer 3. I was disappointed with how the writers wrote her character. She doesn’t really have any significance in the film. However, I cannot blame Fanning for bad writing.
I did appreciate how Fanning’s character was tied to an old friend of McCall’s. You would have to see Equalizer 2 to know who that person is. More action and fighting scenes would have been nice to see, but that is difficult to do as Washington is 68 years-old now.
Overall, Equalizer 3 not a movie I recommend seeing in theaters. During the film, I kept thinking about how I wished I was watching Man on Fire. However, Denzel Washington always does a tremendous job acting with the writing and plot he is given. For that reason, I encourage you to watch the movie when it is available for streaming.
