by Alexis Spier – The Mustangs dominated the Concordia Bulldogs beating them 62-6 in their homecoming game. They maintain their winning streak and now have a record of 6-0.
Morningside captured the momentum quickly when Landry Phipps returned two back to back fumbles. He converted one fumble for a touchdown, and the other led to a field goal. The Mustangs continued putting the pressure on Concordia, and the Bulldogs were doomed from the start.
Beating a team by more than 50 is not uncommon for the Mustangs. The real excitement came from senior wide receiver Zach Norton who collected a hat trick on the game. This was his second time scoring three touchdowns in a game. The first time he had three touchdowns was in the 2022 season against Dordt.
Norton hauled in nine catches for 140 yards and three touchdowns. Along with Norton, receiver Josh Simmons collected two touchdowns for 61 yards.
Following the game, Norton earned 5th place in Mustang history with 3,025 total career yards. In addition to reaching 5th place in total yards, Norton is also the 6th person in Morningside history to reach 3,000 yards.
“It’s exciting climbing the ladder to the top,” said Norton. “I hope to one day catch the guys who helped me get where I am today.”
Norton is referring to receivers Reid Jurgensmeier and Austin Johnson. Jurgensmeier finished his career with 5,463 yards, while Johnson graduated with 3,985 yards. They hold second and third place in total yards in Mustang history.
So far in this season Norton has seven touchdowns for 609 yards. He averages 101.5 yards per game. Norton also earned GPAC player of the week in his astounding game against the Mount Marty Lancers where he tallied 11 catches for 236 yards and two touchdowns. He and the Mustangs will travel to Dakota Wesleyan October 14th and will kick off their 7th game of the season at 1 p.m.
