by Josie Dike–Katie Copple is a 2015 Morningside graduate who is now an evening news anchor for Siouxland News.

Before she was writing and sitting alongside fellow anchor Larry Wentz, she dabbled in news cast producing, digital content producing, and photojournalism.

However, a career in the media is not exactly what Copple originally envisioned when she started her education at Morningside. Copple began college as a Psychology major. She later found her niche in the media after taking some Mass Communication classes.

Copple became involved in the school’s sports broadcasting department covering multiple sporting events, hosting a show on KMSC Fusion 93, as well as writing for The Collegian Reporter. Copple’s first broadcast experience was the coverage of Barack Obama’s Presidential campaign visit to Morningside in 2012. This experience fed her passion for the media.

Copple said, “I had never been so nervous, but once I began this sort of thing it kind of fell into place for me and I realized this industry was where I could make a difference.”

Since graduating, Copple has worked for two affiliates with many different job titles. Fresh out of college she started her first professional job as a production assistant and photographer for the local ABC news affiliate in Sioux City. Currently, she works for the local CBS/FOX news affiliate as an evening news anchor, and may even be considered a “jack of all trades” considering her many job titles and experiences she has had in the news industry.

Copple explained, “I literally do it all. And the cool thing about this local Sioux City market, or starter market, is that people who are fresh out of college and just starting in the industry are able to explore.” Copple has been able to travel around covering numerous stories ranging from chasing severe storms, medical research stories, and highschool sports broadcasting.

Copple has fallen in love with the television industry. “I love what I do, and I am very blessed with the opportunities I have gotten. It has allowed me to share stories and make a difference in my local community,” she said.

Copple’s insight into the media industry gave students a positive outlook on their future careers and opportunities they can strive for.
