by Payton Miller–The Sioux City International Film Festival is returning for its 17th year this Thursday, September 29, at the Promenade Cinema 14.
All short film entries on display this weekend must be 30 minutes or less in length and fall within one of the categories of Comedy, Horror/Thriller, Documentary, Sci-Fi/Fantasy, and Drama. The overall theme of the event is “Music in Film,” however, the short films on display do not need to fall within that realm.
Opening night begins with a showing of “Score” followed by a Q&A from the film’s director, Matt Schrader. This will be the only full-length film shown at the festival. Friday through Sunday short films will be on display at various times throughout the day. A full schedule can be found on the Sioux City International Film Festival website.
Tickets can be purchased in person or online and are available as one-show passes, day passes, and festival passes. VIP tickets can be purchased to see all movies available at the festival and attend the post-screening parties. Workshops will take place throughout the weekend and are open to the public to attend.
Cash prizes will be awarded after the festival. Prize categories include Audience’s Choice, Best in Fest, and a prize for one movie in each film category.
Dr. Leslie Werden, one of the festival’s board members, encourages students to come to the event and experience the hard work of these young filmmakers.
“Many of the short films we show come from young artists who are pursuing careers in this field, so encouraging our students to see what is available, possible, and achievable by others closer to their age is important to me,” said Werden.
The festival gives Morningside students with an interest in filmmaking the opportunity to learn from individuals in the industry and network with individuals who share their interests.
