Mustangs dominate GPAC golf

GPAC Champions

by Chloe Krommendyk–Both the men’s and women’s teams are officially GPAC champions after many impressive rounds of golf.

The men brought home their fourth consecutive conference championship at the Bluffs Golf Course in Vermillion, SD.  Senior Sam Storey and freshman Mason Weeks split the title of individual conference champions, as they both finished with scores of 216 after the final 56 holes.

Co-medalist Weeks, asked about his success, said, “I felt like I was managing the course very well and was able to get myself in the right positions off the tee to be able to make a good swing and get myself good looks at birdie. I was able to get up and down and make putts when it mattered most.”

Senior Xan Milligan and sophomore Jackson Sitzmann also landed themselves in the top 10, which will earn them All–Conference bids. Senior Jonny Douglas will also be voted onto the All-Conference team.

The team, along with head coach Nick Wanderscheid are excited to continue their season for one more trip to TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois where they will compete in the 70th Annual NAIA National Championship on May 17-20.

“I’m very blessed to be a part of this team and am very glad that I could bring something to this team as a freshman and I can’t wait to see what we can do at Nationals,” said Weeks.

The women had a similar success story at their GPAC tournament, also with four players in the top 10. Taking first place was sophomore Sofia Castelan, shooting a 307. Close behind her was senior Laia Badosa. Also finishing in the top ten were seniors Maria Zorilla and Maria Nava.

Medalist Castelan said, “I was nervous early on, as I knew I was leading and wanted to keep it that way.”

And that she did.

The team is excited to take on Oklahoma City’s Lincoln Park West for the NAIA Championship on May 24-27.
