KMSC celebrates its 44th

KMSC Staff

by Payton Miller–KMSC notched its 44th birthday this year, and is making plans to celebrate number 45 next April.

Originally located on the top floor of Lewis hall, KMSC radio went live in April of 1978 as a top-40 music format.

From there it made its move from Lewis to the basement of the Olsen Student Center in 1989. From there it made its final move from the Olsen center to the HJF Library and transitioned to the Alternative format that we know today.

After being forced off the air briefly in 2008 to make way for a class A station, KMSC made its return in August of 2008 as Fusion 93, the name we know today. The station has been used as a teaching device to mold the minds of young students for years to come.

The station is made up of student DJs who dedicate their time to the betterment of that station. The student staff is made up of five chosen directors and countless mass communication students.

Cade Schulte, music director at Fusion 93 reminisces about his time at the station. “Working at KMSC is such a unique experience that you won’t find in any other department or major here on campus and I’ve been able to meet so many DJs that I otherwise would never have known,” he said.

Schulte was a DJ at KMSC for one year before he was selected as one of the directors for the 2021-2022 academic year.

The station allows for a hands-on experience that students can be a part of from their first day of freshman year whether they are majoring in communications or not.

“I love that KMSC is open to any and all majors. As someone not majoring in Mass communication, I have appreciated the opportunity to get hands-on experience with the radio station and other aspects of the Mass Comm department,” said Garrett Arbuckle, KMSC’s news director.

KMSC welcomes students of all majors and welcomes anyone to tune in to KMSC Fusion 93 either on the radio or on the RadioFX app to hear all the hard work the student DJs put into the station.
