“I Know What You Did Last Summer” TV Series Review

By: Morgan Roberts

Storyline: “In a town full of secrets, a group of teenagers are stalked by a mysterious killer a year after a fatal accident on their graduation night.”

This 2021 American teen horror series is loosely based on the 1973 novel I know What You Did Last Summer by Lois Duncan.

Containing eight, 45 minute episodes, this series follows a broken friend group Lennon and Alison Grant (Madison Iseman), Margot Gilbert (Brianne Tju), Dylan Scanlon (Ezekiel Goodman), Riley Thacker (Ashley Moore), and Johnny Lahela (Sebastian Amoruso).

Warning. Spoilers Ahead

It opens to twin sisters Lennon and Alison arguing at a post-graduation party. Alison has just found out Lennon had relations with her (Alison’s) crush who happens to be Dylan from the group. The friend group is one that Lennon is part of, while Alison is more of the antisocial, depressed teen who gets invited along by her sister.

After the argument, Lennon throws her necklace at Alison and storms out to walk off her anger of the situation, while Alison goes to their car for a moment of alone time. Not long after, the friend group hops in the car and wants Alison; who they think is Lennon, to take them home. On the way, they end up hitting someone on the road. Who is the mysterious person? None other than Lennon, but the group thinks that it is Alison. Alison decides to keep up this façade and steps into her new role as Lennon, the fun party girl of their friend group. They hide the body in an old cave where the twins mother actually committed suicide, as she was part of a cult and did it in a way of sacrifice.

Their dad, Bruce (Bill Heck) is of course able to immediately spot the difference in his daughter and asks where Lennon is. The truth comes out and he decided to create a plan that hides the fact that Lennon is dead and has Alison essentially become her. They make up a story that Alison ran away because she blames Bruce for their mothers’ death. That plan works and Bruce sends ‘Lennon’ to college out of state so members of their small town don’t try to dig into her life.

The Summer after freshman year of college, ‘Lennon’ and the group reunite and are going to have the perfect Summer until group members start getting murdered by a mysterious killer who knows what they did last Summer.

This was basically episode one. It is hard to follow which sister is which and they add the cult plotline to the story, which I think is unnecessary. The story does contain a lot of gore and sexual scenes so be wary when watching. Having a short number of episodes that are on the longer side could be rethought because there is just so much information being thrown at the viewer, making it hard to get sucked into the series. There were curveballs thrown in the show, making me wonder who the killer could be, who is going to get murdered next, and if the secret will be revealed.

I would recommend this show because it was generally good once I was able to invest my time into it and follow along through the twist and turns of the plot.
