‘Solar Opposites’ wins with ‘Rick & Morty’-style humor

by Hailey Barrus–Solar Opposites, a Hulu original, has captured the attention of Adult Swim lovers.

The show revolves around an alien family that landed on earth after their planet exploded, and are now having to get accustomed to their new life.

The show is produced by the same writers and voice actors as adult swim hit Rick and Morty. Of these actors the most noticable is voice actor Justin Roiland. Roiland is best known as the vice of Rick Sanchez in Rick and Morty. In Solar Opposites, Roiland plays the main character Korvo.

Although it seems the animation and actors are within the same realm as Rick and Morty, the humor and set up of the show is much different. Solar Opposites presents a much more dry and, dare I say, alien form of humor.

The jokes that hit during the show may go over some individuals’ heads. The show does get rather graphic, and there are some interesting plot lines that evolve throughout the first two seasons. From a microscopic human civilization in one of the main characters’ bedrooms, to the adventures of this dysfunctional alien family and the trouble they cause, the show leaves the audience entertained.

The most interesting part about these aliens that differs from humans is that they do not have a gender. When they come to earth they get to decide which gender they will identify as. The show gets creative showing the relationships between the main characters, compared to human relationships.

Overall, if you are interested in adult animation I think this show will hit the mark. Solar Opposites has humor, violence, and a new concept of how humans and aliens can live their lives. Throughout the first two seasons I was entirely entertained by the plots. If you are itching for a show similar to the infamous Rick and Morty this show is for you.

Rating 8/10.
