everything means nothing Actually Means Everything: A blackbear Review

by Mari Pizzini–The summer of 2020 can only be described one way: a bummer. Well, except for the August 21 release of blackbear’s newest album, everything means nothing. Even his track “hot girl bummer” is a banger.

The opening five tracks of the album were pre-released as singles. I hopped on those as soon as they were released. Just like @isabellaparis said, “‘ft. blackbear’ means I’m listening,” and in this case it means I’m listening nonstop.

“queen of broken hearts” and “me & ur ghost” became fan favorites (of mine) almost immediately. It didn’t hurt that they both have easy-to-remember choruses. Does that make them simplistic? Maybe. But does that also make them memorizable and easy to vibe to? Absolutely.

everything means nothing continues blackbear’s hip-hop, R&B, and pop sound that he is so famous for. However, unlike his previous albums ANONYMOUS (2019) and digital druglord (2017), everything means nothing discusses topics I’d consider to be more “carefree.” At least, kind of.

blackbear’s constant ‘the world sucks and I hate it’ mentality is still clearly seen throughout this album, but songs like “smile again” stray from his usual messages. Additionally, blackbear seems to discuss emotions and being able to “feel” more openly than previously.

In my opinion, “i feel bad” and “if i were you (with Lauv)” stole the show (p.s. I’m also a bit of a Lauv fan, so that may have played into my choices). Although I RARELY skip any song on this album, “i feel 2 much” and “smile again” would be my also choices to occasionally fast-forward through.

I’m sure there’s a song on this album for almost anyone, and I’ve been playing it on repeat for weeks now. For that reason, I’m giving it a perfect 12 out of 12 tracks (crazy, I know!).
