Morningside Alumni Art Show: art past graduation

by Tracie Tuttle–The Morningside Alumni Art Show is currently on display in the Eppley Art Gallery. The show, which takes place every other year, consists of art work completed by Morningside alumni who graduated with a degree in photography, graphic design, studio art, or art education.

This year’s show features twelve artists whose graduation years vary from 1989 to 2019, with each artist displaying art that is varying in style and medium. With a variety of paintings, photography, and mixed media pieces, there is something for everyone to see.

A notable piece is “Bucket o’ Chicken” by Amy Gerking Anderson, who graduated in 1989 with a degree in art education. The piece, that was created using a process of encaustic (painting with hot wax and pigment) on a wooden stump, was created by Anderson to “remind all of [her] students that creating can have a positive impact on their emotions.”

Lesley Valerio Chairez, a junior art education major, said “The alumni art show is a great opportunity for both graduated students to show their art and for current students to become inspired by the art.”  Chairez went on to say that her favorite part of the show is the variety of different pieces to look at and study.

If you would like to check out the Alumni Art Show, it will be up until November 8 in the Eppley Art Gallery, which is open Monday through Friday, 8am – 5pm.
