This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is Evelina-768x1024.jpg

There are a lot of words that can be used to describe Evelina Moran. Kind, social, caring, and full of energy are only some of the words that Evelina’s friends use to describe her.

When Sara Marrufo, one of Evelina’s closest friends, was asked to describe Evelina in three words, she chose the words bubbly, social, and sensitive. “I chose these words because the first impression I got from her was her energy. She is so curious and excited about life in general and it shows whenever she walks into a room.”

Evelina loves surrounding herself with people. So, it doesn’t come as surprise that one of her hobbies is spending quality time with her friends, as well as soccer, which she has been playing for the last 8 years, and skiing. But her most favorite hobby of all, is singing Taylor Swift in the car with all of her friends.

Jolina Steubner, one of Evelina’s closest friends and teammate, was asked how she would describe Evelina as a person. Jolina described Evelina as “very outgoing, nice to everyone, and she always brings the energy.”

Her mom moving to Sweden had a big impact on who she is today. Her mom moved to Sweden when Evelina was 10-years-old and since then, her and her sister would go to Sweden for two months every year. “We were able to travel the world and see so many things. If I never experienced different cultures, I would not be the person I am today.” she said.

Evelina’s favorite place that she has travelled to so far is Italy. She has been to Italy twice and Evelina described the country as beyond magical. “The sunshine, ocean and food are just perfection.” she said.

Evelina’s biggest dream is to become a world traveler. She has been traveling since she was 10-years-old and it’s her absolute favorite thing to do, which is why she wants to continue doing it. Evelina feels very lucky to have seen as many countries as she did. She doesn’t only want to travel, but she also wants to volunteer and help people in need all around the world. This shows again what a kind and caring Evelina Moran is.

The next country on Evelina’s travel bucket list is France, and then preferably the south of France. The reason that she wants to go there is because she has seen so many videos of that region of France and she always thought it looked incredible. In addition to that, Evelina loves learning about the history of countries and she’s curious to learn more about the history of southern France.

“If I could fulfill my dream I would be the happiest person.” Evelina said.

During a team bonding activity with her soccer team, Evelina met a lot of new people, some of who would end up to be a some of her closest friends. One of these people was Jolina Steubner. Key Partner in Covax Will Stop Giving Free Vaccines to Middle-Income Nations

Global demand for free Covid shots has dropped, driving a shift away from the goal of broad coverage.

In the upcoming year, one of the key partners in Covax, the organization that has led the effort to bring Covid vaccines to poor and middle-income countries, will stop supplying the vaccines to a big part of the global population. They will only keep providing them to the lowest-income nations.

The board of governors of Gavi, the nonprofit organization that supplies immunizations to developing countries, voted at a meeting on Thursdays to end the Covax support for 37 countries, where hundreds of thousands of people have died from the coronavirus.

This decision reflects on the fact that demand for Covid had dropped worldwide, and that Gave has found itself overcommitted to vaccine purchases, even when countries don’t want them. The continuing vaccination efforts are expected to now mainly focus on high-risk groups.

This story can be considered newsworthy. Covid is a topic that has affected the entire world for the past couple of years. Any changes in policies, or in this case vaccination supplies, concerns every country in the world. The article was well-written, easy to read and easy to follow, and it involved all necessary information. The order in which the author wrote the information helped give the story a good flow. The author really used the pyramid form, starting with the big view and then slowly going into more details as the story goes on.

Homer, Midland Zoo’s Oldest Bear, Found Dead

Homer, a 16-year-old polar bear, passed away at the Midland Zoo this morning.

At 7 A.M., one hour after Homer’s feeding time, zookeeper Sara N. Getty found the polar bear floating in the pool of the exhibit. Homer was the oldest polar bear at the zoo. Zookeeper Getty described Homer as “a very curious and playful polar bear and we will miss him terribly.”

Since 1985, polar bears have thrived at Midland Zoo. Their exhibits makes is possible for polar bears to engage in their natural behaviors. The bears can play in manufactured snow, dig in gravel and hunt trout in the chilled pool. Having the polar bears and this exhibit also helps educate zoo visitors about these threatened animals.

The cause of death is still unknown. The zoo is going to perform a necropsy to try and determine the cause. But the results will not be available for several weeks. Midland Zoo director Chris P. Bacon said, “We will do everything in our power to determine how this bear died. Animal welfare and the preservation of species are our primary goals here at the zoo.”

The other two polar bears that lived with Homer, ages 9 and 10, were removed from the exhibit and are now being monitored by veterinary staff.

The article I chose for this assignment talks about the launch of a partnership between the Morningside University School of Aviation and Oracle Aviation. With this new partnership, enrollment is now open for students who are interested in enrolling in the Professional flight or Aviation management program for Fall 2023.

The potential audience for this article is students who are interested in enrolling in one of the programs that is offered by the Morningside University School of Aviation. The purpose of this story is to inform people how this partnership enables students to enroll at the Morningside University School of Aviation and how it provides the skilled talent that the aviation and other industries in this area need. https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/southall-franklin-tennessees-destination-defining-luxury-farm-based-resort-opens-its-doors-301691784.html

  • The story is that the long-awaited destination for the evolution of traditional Southern hospitality, Southall in Franklin, Tennessee, has officially opened its doors. This idyllic escape is set to show people the simple luxuries of living off the land.
  • The audience of this story are people who are interested in exploring the simple luxuries of living of the land. Southall was created to welcome people and offer them an experience where remarkable design, earnest hospitality, and unparalleled farm, spa and culinary experiences combine.
  • The benefit of this story for the reader is to be able to learn about Southall and the experience. The story offers a lot of information about both what Southall has to offer its visitors and how it came to be.
  • The benefit of this story for Southall is creating awareness. By posting this story, the company let people know that they had officially opened their doors. The made sure that people get the information they need about Southall and by giving them the information they will be able to draw visitors.
  • This story is unlike previous stories I have done for this class because this story is mostly written to promote Southall and to draw visitors. Most of the previous stories I have done for this class have been more objective whereas this story is more subjective.

Riots break out in Brussels after Belgium’s surprising loss to Morocco.

Last Sunday, after Belgium lost 2-0 to Morocco at the World Cup, riots erupted in the heart of Brussels and several other Belgian cities.

Videos that were shared online show people overturning a car and setting it on fire in Brussels, the capital of Belgium. According to local reports, rioters also set fire to electric scooters and threw bricks at other vehicles. During the riots, one person suffered from injuries according to Ilse van de Keere, a Brussels police spokeswoman.

In response to the riots, the Brussels police deployed water cannons and fired tears gas to clear the crowd. It was not clear if anyone was arrested.

In my opinion, this is a news worthy story. However, it is not the best article I have read so far. The topic itself is good and is worth mentioning, but the article is really short and only offers limited information on the topic. After the initial topic, the riots in Belgium, has been talked about, the article suddenly mentions something about riots in the Netherlands. I was a little confused by this, and I don’t know if I would have included that in this article the way the author did. Overall, I think the topic is definitely news worthy, but I think the author could have tried to write the article a little more thoroughly.

Story #3: Broadcast Script – Final Draft

Good afternoon, my name is Nienke van Drunen and this is your Daily News from Around the World.

Today, we are going to start off with a look at some of the changes in the Formula 1 world.

Story #1: F1 Shook Up Tradition by Adding Sprint Races

Last season, the sprint was introduced to Formula 1 with the goal to add excitement to a race weekend. But the Formula 1 drivers had mixed feelings about this new format.

A sprint is one-third of the distance of the Grand Prix of that weekend, with no pitstops. Instead of the usual qualification that determines the Grand Prix grid on Saturday, the sprint is run on Saturday and determines the starting grid for the Grand Prix. The usual qualifying is pushed back to Friday and then determines the starting grid for the sprint.

For all Formula 1 fans, the extra sprint races were a change in their normal racing schedule. Lea Okkels, a 21-year-old student at Morningside University and a Formula 1 fan, gave us her opinion on these sprint races. (audio), Lea said.

Not all Formula 1 drivers feel the same about the sprint weekends. Some of them like the diversity in the racing schedule. Others, however, say that they are less willing to take risks during a sprint because they don’t want to damage the car before the actual race. In their opinion that is not what a race should be about.

Next up, is the suspense in the United States that is brought by the midterm elections.

Story #2: At the Capitol, the Question of Who Won the Midterms Lingers Days Afterward

There is an air of suspense hanging over the Capitol combined with an air of uncertainty. Members of both parties were poring over the ongoing counts in search of clues to the final outcome.

Cassie McDermott is a 19-year-old student from Colorado and is now attending Morningside University. She talked about how she experienced the midterm elections and gave her opinion on it. (audio)

The Congress was in a state of suspended animation after the polls closed in a consequential and highly anticipated midterm election. Nobody is sure which party is going to be in charge of the House and Senate.

Finally, we will talk about the changes and developments in the war between Ukraine and Russia.

Story #3: Ukraine Peace Talks Remain Distant Even as Moscow Signals a Retreat

American and European leaders say that they cannot push Ukraine and Russia into negotiations. They say serious peace talks between the two countries are very unlikely in the near future.

Both Russian and Ukrainian officials have made separate recent public comments about potential peace negotiations. Their last known direct talks fell apart more than six months ago. Even though both countries are talking about it, U.S. officials say they don’t believe these talks will begin soon.

Jolina Steubner is a 19-year-old student from Germany attending Morningside University. She shared her thoughts on possible outcomes for the war between Russia and Ukraine. (audio)

Officials also concede that it is difficult to imagine that terms of a settlement will be found that Ukraine and Russia would accept.

Thank you for listening to your Daily News from Around the World. Have a great rest of your day and we will see you again tomorrow.

A Dutch court is delivering a verdict in the MH17 crash, which killed 298 people.

A Dutch court is delivering a verdict in the trial over the shooting down of a passenger jet above eastern Ukraine in 2014.

In the trial, the verdict is being delivered to four men with ties to the Russian security services over the shooting down of a passenger jet. The shooting down of the jet happened during a Moscow-backed separatist uprising that foreshadowed Russia’s full-scale invasion of the country this year.

The trial can only promise a limited measure of justice for the 298 people that were killed in the crash. The defendants of the trail are believed to be in Russian-controlled territory or Russia itself, so they’re unlikely to ever serve any sentence they would receive.

The trial had been opened more than two years ago as an attempt to try and assign responsibility for a cream that had seemed to have gone without punishment.

After the crash, the world reacted with outrage, and the Western nations sought to hold Russia accountable. Russia, however, had repeatedly denied any responsibility in the deaths, even though there was evidence that the plane was shot from a Russian military base across the border into eastern Ukraine, as well as intercepted calls and messages that point to the involvement of Russian-backed separatists.

None of the defendants of the case were arrested or appeared in court. They were tried in absentia.

According to Mr. Ploeg, the chairman of the MH17 Flight Disaster Foundation, the absence of the defendants made it harder for the trial to bring clarity and catharsis to the victims and help them come to terms with what happened.

What drew me to this story in the first place was the fact that I saw the word ‘Dutch’ in the title. Being from the Netherlands, it’s always attractive to read about your home country when you look through the news.

In my opinion, this was a news worthy story. Even though the original plane crash happened a few years age, they still dress new developments of this event. The author did a good job of summarizing what happened during the crash and then explaining the new developments of this event. This made it easy to follow for readers who did not know about the crash from a few years ago or for readers who just needed a reminder on the topic. I don’t think there is anything missing in this story. The important details are explained in a clear but direct way, the author did not over complicate it. Because of this, the article was easy to read and easy to understand.

Marnix van Exel’s Competitive Side

During the volleyball intramural, soccer player Marnix van Exel discovered his competitive side for the game of volleyball.

Every year, Morningside University organizes intramural for different sports. The intramural is designed to allow anyone to become involved in different sports. Teams can be formed by anyone, with anyone. You don’t have to be an athlete to participate, but if you are an athlete, you cannot participate in the intramural for your own sport.

Marnix loves sports and always gets very competitive while playing sports. He was excited to try out a different sport, so he created a team with some of his friends and signed them up for the volleyball intramural.

Last Wednesday, Marnix and his team had their quarter final game and he was more competitive than he had felt in any of the previous games. Now, it was all or nothing. If they would lose this game, they would be out of the tournament, and Marnix was going to do everything to avoid that. Even though Marnix and his team fought hard, they lost their quarter final match and are now out of the tournament.

Next to Marnix’ feeling of competitiveness, he also got frustrated during the game. “In the previous games we always had the same people play and now, all of a sudden, two of the others wanted to play even though they never wanted to before. I just wanted to win.” he said. Their usual team had built a good connection together and they became better with every match, so when the other players suddenly decided they wanted to play, it frustrated Marnix.

Marnix also said that his team was criticizing him for playing too careful, even though Marnix was one of the best players on their team that scored them the most points. On top of that, the ref was making bad calls that were in favor of the other team.

“I don’t like to lose.” Marnix said. So, the loss was already frustrating and the other adding factors did not make it better. But, Marnix stayed competitive throughout the entire game and fought till the end.
