One Good Conversation

In an interview with Luc Mai, a Morningside University student, I discovered what college life was like during the COVID-19 pandemic from another students view. At the start of the pandemic, Luc was initially worried, being from Europe he was in the tough situation of deciding to stay here in the United States or head home as things began to get worse. As panic began on social media, Luc made the decision to fly home in case borders began to close. Things got worse in European countries before it got here to the U.S. He was lucky as some of his friends that stayed in the U.S. were stuck here as borders began to close and flight travel became limited.

On the bright side of things, there is a seven hour time difference from here in Sioux City to where Luc was located in Europe. This made schooling more relaxed for him as he was able to go about his day in as normal of a manner as possible and do his school work and Zoom into classes at later in his day.

The time spent participating in physical activity is also correlated to the risk one has of developing an anxiety disorder. Overall, if an individual has an everyday or frequent exercise routine, it is likely that will reduce their anxiety. At the Olympic games in Paris in 2024, breaking will be an official Olympic sport. Before the skill became an Olympic talent, Red Bull had put on break dancing competitions for years. The most complicated thing with getting breaking in the olympics is figuring out how to create a culture similar to how they compete today. currently, most breaking competitions take place in a circle with a crowd around them and a live DJ. It will be interesting to see how the Olympics handles this as this is not only how they compete it is also a part of the culture of breaking.

In my personal opinion, if this style of dancing is allowed in the Olympics, why aren’t all styles?

Insurances companies have recently began using a loophole to prevent mental health coverage. There are new exemptions under both state and local government that have prevented many employees such as teachers and police officers the mental health coverage they need. More teachers than ever are quitting because of the fact that the pandemic is taking a psychological toll on this career in particular. These laws need to be revisited in order to provide proper mental healthcare for those that do the most for us.

Getting to know Elizabeth Obermeier

Elizabeth Obermeier grew up in Indianola, IA and attended Indianola High School. She decided to go to Morningside after visiting along with her sister while she was in the eighth grade and discovered that there was a Dairy Queen across the street so she would be able to get a blizzard everyday. In the end, she revisited Morningside and decided it would be a great place for her.

Today, Elizabeth is a senior triple major in Graphic Design, Marketing, and Business Administration. Along with this, she was also a part of the Marching Band for her first three years playing the Alto Saxophone and the Bassoon. This year, she will be a member of the choir. You can find her on campus working with the telethon for institutional advancement as well! After college, Elizabeth plans to find a job in a bigger midwestern city such as Omaha, Kansas City, or Chicago in order to find a well paying job.

Outside of school, she enjoys spending time with her friends and getting half price appetizers at Applebee’s, wasting time on TikTok, and doing creative things such as drawing. Over the summer, she worked on a construction crew and last semester she was an intern at Northwestern Mutual Marketing as a recruiting intern.
