Intro to Religion 2

I think that Turners model of pilgrimage is very interesting. I think I agree with it more than Eliade’s because it’s more understandable and just makes more sense in my opinion. I can see all the different stages in the Turner model such as the anti-structure and the communitas in all the religious pilgrimage that I know of right now. I also find it very interesting that you can find this cycle in a lot of movies. From Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings to funny movies that you wouldn’t expect it in like Step Brothers of Anchorman. Even more interesting is the fact that i can see this cycle happening in my life right now. Going to college is a kind of a pilgrimage and has already changed me.

dream job

I’m not sure what my dream job is yet. However, after listening to Alex Watters I understand how important it is to start doing things that increase your chances to get into a good career out of college. He made it clear that you can never start too early or work too hard to get the job that you want, regardless of your limitations. He also stressed the importance of being connected to people. Without connections, it can be very hard to get into a good career. I was very inspired by the fact that Alex continued to have a successful life, both socially and career wise. Through all of this Alex showed me just what it might take to get your dream job, and now I’m very motivated to get mine.

Intro to Religion

In our Intro to Religion class, I have already learned so much. One of the most interesting things though, is all the different ways people define religion. Coming from northwest Iowa, i really wasn’t aware of all the different ways to look at religion. I always thought that it was just some belief in a higher power, and people chose different things to believe in. However, once learning all the different theories from the likes of Frazer, Durkheim, Freud, and Marx; I can see that the world as a whole can view religion very differently. In fact, most of these men don’t even believe in a higher power at all. This has shown me that i still have a lot to learn about religion and pretty much everything else in life, which makes me very excited to continue going to Intro to Religion and find out all the other types of ideas and theories that society has for such an interesting topic.
