News Comment #13 comes from the New York Times
The Reepct for Marriag Act which would enshrine Same-Sex and Interacial Marriage into law.
The overall support for Same-Sex Marriage has gone up to 70 percent of voter according to the New York Times. The New York Times also outlines that this is widely accepted by both political parties.
The bill made its way tot he United States Senate in which some provisions were added to the bill. This would cause worry for some Republicans citing Religious Freedoms according to the New York Times.
The reason for the big push to pass this bill why Democrats have control of both chambers is when Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thompson hinted at the reconsidering of the case that allowed Same-Sex Marriage according to the New York Times. According to the New York Times this all happened in June after the Supreme Court overturned Roe V. Wade.
A member of the United States Senate, Senator Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin a Democrat was the sponsor of the bill in the Senate according to the New York Times. Senator Baldwin is the first lesbian elected to congress and said this about the bill “put to rest the worries of millions of loving couples who are concerned that someday and activist Supreme Court may take their rights and freedoms away.”
This bill had its fair share of backlash. An example is from Republican Missouri Congresswoman Vicki Hartzler giving an emotional and teary eyed emotional plea to vote no on the Respect for Marriage act in the House of Representative citing “This bill only serves to further demonize biblical values.” According to the New York Times.
This article is is important too many people because Same Sex Marriage is a big topic too many people. This article also relates to college students sho are gay and allows them to full be covered and respected knowing this is going to be enshrined in federal law. This also has to be a big relief of stress off of t heir holder.
