Due to fear of cancer risk from longterm exposer the Iowa Highway Patrol has ordered a ban on hand-held radar guns until studies can be conducted on their safety.

The move is one of the first of it’s kind and comes two months after three municipal officers in Cedar Rapids filed workman’s compensation claims, saying they developed cancer from using the hand-held guns

In a statement yesterday Iowa Highway Patrol spokesman Adam Smith said,”The feeling here is to err on the side of caution until more is known about the issue. The Whole situation is under review.”

The ban will affects 70 different handheld radar guns that will be removed from service but officers will still use cruiser mounted units.
