Calissa Hanson 2

Phineas and Ferb saved traumatized 10-year-old Calissa Hanson and give her future goals.

Hanson has had a love for the tv show Phineas and Ferb from a young age. Growing up with two older stories she always had to watch what they wanted. This show was the first show that was completely hers. She got clothing, Cds and many more Phineas and Ferb items. Hanson and her family went on a family vacation to Disneyland one summer. While there they went on the Ferris wheel swing ride. Hanson was not a fan and was traumatized from the experience. Then a gleaming beacon of hope appeared. Phineas and Ferb were walking towards her. She said hi and was feeling much better. She then was allowed to get a Perri the Platipus sweatshirt that she still wears to this day.

One of the most lethal diseases, tuberculosis, has a new experimental vaccine has protected about half the people who got it. “While a 50 percent success rate is hardly ideal — the measles vaccine, by contrast, is about 98 percent protective — about 10 million people get tuberculosis each year and 1.6 million dies of it. Even a partly effective vaccine may save millions of lives,” according to The New York Times. The vaccine is still in testing stages but has been tested in about 3,300 adults in Kenya, South Africa, and Zambia. “All of them already had latent tuberculosis — a silent infection that might or might not progress to active tuberculosis. Of those who got two doses of the GSK vaccine, only 13 developed active tuberculosis during three years of follow-up, according to the new study published in The New England Journal of Medicine. By contrast, 26 of those who got a placebo progressed to active tuberculosis,” according to the New York Times. There is still a ways to go and this isn’t the final Vaccine but it is a strong start in the right direction.

Spooky season has arrived and it is time to celebrate. However, some women are having a hard time finding an outfit that will fit. Finding cute clothing in a plus-size can be hard enought let alone a fun or sexy costume. The article from Vox brings up that “Halloween in the United States is an $8.8 billion industry, and dressing up is a big part of it. According to the National Retail Federation, an estimated 67 percent of Americans will spend $3.2 billion on costumes this year, more than candy or decorations.” These numbers could even be higher if the costume industry was more inclusive. Halloween is supposed to be a time anyone can pretend to be whatever they want to be. However, most costumes only come in “typical” sizes if even that. There are no extra larges or bigger. This is a problem because with more movements promoting body positivity more people are noticing that the Halloween industry is having a hard time moving quickly to keep up with the times. Hopefully, in upcoming Halloweens, the industry will understand anyone can be anything on Halloween.

“It’s estimated that each military dog saves the lives of 150 to 200 service members,” according to the National Geographic website. These dogs are true K-9 heroes that deserve recognition just like every human hero. Even Obama sign into law that all war dogs have provisions for retirement.

These dogs do more than just track down the bad guys they also sniff out explosives, protect their handlers and can sniff out attackers. War dogs love their jobs and take it very seriously they protect their handlers and their handlers will do anything to protect them.

War dogs, like Canon, are making a difference and bringing justice to the world. They can do things no human can ever do. Mans’s best friend is more than just a friend they are heroes.

Both the video and the article are organized in the upside-down pyramid. The video is full of information about the wildfire. However, the article has way more information. Some of the information at the end of the news article seemed less important. The article from Vox used sources like the national forest service. While the Video from CBS they used interviews from people who are living there. I think the video really hit emotions more than the article the sound of the fire and the visual of a house burning down with people watching it touches a soft spot in people’s hearts. I also think it is intresting that the article stuck more to facts while the video tried to touch peoples hearts and make a connection. It seemed while they had the same subject the purposes of the stroies were different.

Meatless Mondays – Final Paper

Two men on a mission to help save the planet. Skyler Briggs and Samuel Padilla are challenging themselves not to eat meat on Mondays. They chose not to eat meat because the meat is a major contributor to methane and Co2 and one of the main uses of water is raising and processing meat. They do not want to go vegan because they like meat but want to help out the planet. To make sure he still gets protein in his diet Mr. Briggs will eat whey protein, which is a powder he can just add to his drinks.

According to Peta’s webpage, “Producing just one hamburger uses enough fossil fuel to drive a small car 20 miles. Of all raw materials and fossil fuels used in the U.S., more than one-third are devoted to raising animals for food.” This is why cutting one day of meat, a week, can make such a huge difference. “About 260 million acres of U.S. forest have been cleared to create cropland to produce feed for animals raised for food. The meat industry is directly responsible for 85 percent of all soil erosion in the U.S.” according to Peta’s webpage. Processed meat is making a huge impact on the environment. There are simple ways to help reduce this footprint as Samuel Padilla talks about. “This is a movement going on, I didn’t start it, Skyler didn’t start it. It is to bring awareness. Not everyone can go vegan or vegetarian, but we can give up meat once a week.”

Witnesses like Emma Schmitz talked about how it might be hard to do this challenge. One example she gave was how she does not preplan what she is going to eat. She stated, “I can see a lot of people jumping on the bandwagon and this becoming a bigger trend.” Does she think this will change the world, no, but it makes her more conscious about the meat she eats and doesn’t eat.

“Never half-ass two things, whole ass whole one thing,” Skyler Briggs mentioned when talking about it. He is a man that when he sets his mind to something he always accomplishes his goals. Mr.Briggs and Mr. Pidilla are trying to save this earth one meatless Monday at a time by bringing awreness to a great movement.

Greta Thunberg, a child activist, is having to defend the science she is promoting and herself. Top figures like Trump have been making comments about Thunberg and sarcastically making online comments. Michael Knowles while on Fox News said, “mentally ill Swedish child who is being exploited by her parents and by the international left,”. Fox has apologies to views and claims they will no longer Book Knowles on the show. I respect Fox for stepping forward and recognizing what he said was not ok. Someone needs to stand up for Thunberg. I think it is very disturbing that a highly recognized member of our society would act so terribly to a young passionate girl. She is simply trying to save our dying planet. https://www.vox.com/energy-and-environment/2019/9/26/20882958/greta-thunberg-climate-change-trump-attacks-right-wing

Speech Story

“We are watching you,” Greta Thunberg said after being asked about the message she has for world leaders. At the United Nations, Climate action summit in NYC, the 16-year-old Swedish climate activist passionately warned the world leaders about climate change.

Ms. Thunberg is making the younger generation’s voice heard. She says with a strong ton, “This is all wrong. I shouldn’t be up here. I should be back in school on the other side of the ocean. Yet you all come to us young people for hope. How dare you!” She goes on to say the world leaders have stolen her childhood. She should be in school but she is still one of the lucky ones. There are people dying and suffering.

There is a 50% chance of staying below 1.5 degrees Celcius in the next ten years. “So a 50% risk is simply not acceptable to us — we who have to live with the consequences,” Ms. Thunberg stated. Ms. Thunberg goes on to say the world leaders are failing us and the younger generation will never forgive them if they choose to fail us.
