Television Show Review: The Flash

imagesBy Derek Krayenhagen—The Flash is a perfect superhero show to get into if you are a novice to the superhero world. There is a sort of lighthearted atmosphere that surrounds The Flash, which is countered by the other CW show Arrow, which has a much darker feel. With the end of season one on the horizon, The Flash has lived up to expectations and has many looking forward to season two.

The Flash is set around Barry Allen who gets struck by lightening during an explosion by a particle accelerator. Barry then gains super speed that he uses to fight crime not only against human forces but also against Meta-humans who are also people who gained powers from the particle accelerator explosion.

The strength of The Flash television show is not the superhero it is the characters. The characters are easy to root for and you can relate with them for the most part. For me, it’s because the characters are younger adults, which is exactly what I am so the trials and tribulations they go through, besides Barry (The Flash) are easy to convey to. The weakness of The Flash is also why people may like it, the light heartedness. Superhero shows nowadays, for example the Nolan Batman trilogy, have a darker more realistic feel. Superheroes are hard to make authentic but The Flash is an even harder sell for that pitch. Batman, Arrow, and the new Daredevil seem to be the way most people want their superheroes, darker and edgier.

Overall I do like The Flash even without that dark feel. As a fan of superhero shows in general it’s easy for me to get into the show. Things that made it more interesting were the crossover episodes with Arrow, the conflicts Barry deals with not only externally but also internally, and the mystery behind Dr. Wells who is the owner of Star Labs, which held the particle accelerator when it exploded and the man who helped Barry become the Flash.

To check out the superhero series tune into the CW at 7:00 on Tuesdays nights.
