Candidates for Student Government Give Campaign Speeches

logoBy Kayla Samek—Candidates for president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, student advocate, and director of communications stated their platforms for their campaign on 12:30pm Tuesday, March 24 in Buck’s. Their speeches were recorded and put on YouTube for students unable to make it to the live speeches. Elections for Student Government are Wednesday and Thursday, March 25 and 26 in Olsen Student center.

Jackson O’Brien, current Student Government president, said the purpose of the speeches were so “elections aren’t just a popularity contest, or who looks prettiest on the posters.”

Candidates have the opportunity to state their goals and plans as SG Executives. The student body was encouraged to attend, but with class schedules not many were able to make it. That is why recordings were posted of the speeches to their YouTube channel, MorningsideSG.

With all executive positions up for grabs, candidates face tough competition; with the exception of Vice President Candidate Diane Nguyen and Secretary Candidate Kyle Hiser, who are running unopposed. Competing for president are junior Paul Johnson and junior Nick Misukanis. Sophomore Alec DeVries and senior transfer student Tiffany Brasby are in the running for SG treasurer. The student advocate position is being fought over by sophomore Alex Sullivan and sophomore Nathan Mann. Sophomore Tori Figge and freshman Rachel Potter are competing for director of communications. Election results will be announced Thursday night or Friday.
