Looks can be deceiving – A story on Bjarne Huth

“When he walks onto the pitch with a big smile on his face you would think that he is a member of the Boy Scouts, but the things he does on the field are just insane.” This is a quote from Nicolo Renzi, a former Morningside Soccer player, who tried to describe Bjarne Huth, in one sentence.

In general, most of Huth’s teammates describe him as a very calm person off the field, but as already mentioned in the quote, Huth’s personality transforms as soon as he sets his foot on the pitch.

Huth was born on February 11th, 2000, in Frankfurt, Germany. The son of Ulrike and Axel Huth graduated from high school in 2018 and then went on to take a so-called “gap year” before committing to Morningside. In that year, he mainly focused on finishing his youth soccer season and the recruiting process for the U.S.

Since he arrived at Morningside, Huth has managed to create a pretty successful resume. The shot-stopper from Frankfurt has been a starter ever since he came to Morningside, and he was awarded the title of “Defensive Player of the Year” in his sophomore season.

It is very important to mention the one thing that really makes him stand out among all the other goalkeepers in the GPAC and the entire nation.

Huth is not just a normal soccer goalkeeper; he is the perfect example of a new type of modern goalkeeper.  His height is surely not optimal for a goalkeeper, as Huth is 5’10” tall. This is unusual given the fact that a pro goalkeeper is usually around 6’2” tall.  However, his excellent abilities in goal make up for every inch that he is missing.

Asked about his size, Huth himself had this to say: “I feel like my size allows me to be quicker and more agile than a lot of taller goalkeepers. When I look back on the past three seasons, the number of times that my speed and agility allowed me to make crucial saves easily outnumbers the amount of times that my size led to us conceding a goal.”

Huth mentioned that he put a lot of time and effort into the development of his speed and agility. In addition to that, he is also an excellent player with the ball at his feet, which is something that is starting to become more and more important for goalkeepers nowadays. A couple of years ago goalkeepers weren’t really known for their good passing and distribution, but this has changed. Ever since the rise of Manuel Neuer, one of the best goalkeepers in the world, goalkeepers became more and more important in building up the game from the back.

According to Kai Schwägerl, a soccer player at Morningside and one of Huth’s center backs, “Bjarne has a better technique than most of the guys on our team and I can’t exclude myself from that.”

Over his three years at Morningside, Huth has always played a key role in Coach Tom Maxon’s squad and helped lead them to two back-to-back GPAC titles. In his first year, he had problems with his eligibility at the beginning of the season, but he still ended up playing almost all of the games that year. The Mustang men went on to secure the GPAC title against their city rival, Briar Cliff University, and therefore also the first title in the program’s history.

In Huth’s second year, the Mustangs were fired up and made it their mission to win another conference title. Covid-19 definitely impacted the soccer season with a lot of games being postponed, especially at the beginning of the season, but that didn’t stop the Mustang Men.

Huth and his team had a breathtaking regular season and yet again won the championship in a rematch of the previous year’s final match. The Mustangs tied Briar Cliff University and managed to secure their second championship in a row.

Huth is well known for always joking around and bringing a good mood to every practice. His ability to never take things too seriously can sometimes be seen as him being indifferent, however, it is just his way of living life. An appropriate word for this would be the German word “Freigeist”, which translates to free spirit.

Off the field, Huth is a very caring and passionate person. Amou Mumm, the student assistant coach on the soccer team, said “Bjarne is not really someone that likes to be in the spotlight. He is very knowledgeable, but he doesn’t really like to show off.”

Despite Huth’s laid-back personality, he is still an integral part of the team. Even though he is not a leader in the sense that he is the team captain, Huth is respected by everyone on the team. Mumm described him as “a silent leader”. When the team needs him, Huth steps up to motivate them, or to remind them of what they all can do.

There were multiple games where it was obvious to see Huth’s ‘transformation’ from off the field to on the field, but one time that really stood out was in the Mustangs’ game against St. Cloud State University. It is important to know that St. Cloud is an NCAA Division 2 University and therefore no Morningside player really expected them to win the game, except for Huth. Before the game, he got the team together and specifically mentioned how the team has everything it takes to win the game. Huth’s pre-game speech led to the Mustangs winning the game with an impressive score of 5-1.

Huth’s partner, Paytn Harmon, summed all of this up in two sentences, “His passiveness and indifference can make a normal person glance and never think twice. For those that sit and talk to him though, they have a different outlook once they leave.”

Aside from Huth’s brilliance on the field and his intriguing personality, he is also an excellent student. The Junior is a double major in Business Administration and General Psychology. In addition to that, Huth is a regular Dean’s List student.

He doesn’t really know what he wants to do with his talents after graduating from Morningside, but he sure has a lot of great things ahead of him.

Trump Tested Positive for Virus Days Before Debate, 2 Ex-Officials Say

This article from the N.Y. Times talks about former President Donald Trump and a secret from the time when he was still the President.

Back in 2020, Donald Trump tested positive for coronavirus, three days before his presidential debate with Joe Biden. According to two former administration officials Trump tested positive but then tested negative shortly after. The White House chose to withhold this information from the public. Even though Trump knew about the positive test result, he allegedly ignored the result and talked with reporters, not wearing a mask.

The article by the N.Y. Times is newsworthy as it shows Trump’s attitude towards Covid-19, especially during the first few months of the pandemic. He talked to the press and even attended an event for military families, possibly endangering other people’s lives. In fact, one of the reporters Trump talked to shortly after the positive test, actually ended up testing positive for Covid-19. In addition to that, it is also interesting to see that Trump’s former Chief of Staff, Mark Meadows went along with everything and continued to enable Trump to do his work, while endangering others.

Luc Mai (Anecdote)

Is being lazy a bad trait?

Luc Mai, an international student at Morningside has a trait that a lot of people share with him. According to himself, he is very lazy.  Everybody would agree to the fact that this is usually a bad trait. However, Mai took this trait and looked at the benefits that he gets from being lazy.

There are multiple times where Mai got his studying and his homework done in the last minute and although he was lazy, he recounts that he got his best grades for exactly these assignments.

According to himself, his laziness makes him more effective. Mai said that he works best under time pressure and because of that he always finds the quickest and easiest way to reach his goals. Mai stated, “I do this because I am not a hard worker, I’m a smart worker.”

This anecdote shows that Mai took this ‘bad’ trait and turned it into one of his strengths.

A Green Light at the Window for Migrants

This article from the N.Y. Times talks about a group of people that help migrants who made it across the Poland – Belarus border.

In the past months, thousands of migrants have been stuck at the border between Belarus and Poland in their attempt to enter the European Union. This entire scenario is part of a big political dispute. Belarus has been sanctioned by the European Union and in order to get back at the E.U., the leader of Belarus, started funneling immigrants through his country into Poland.
However, in the past few days, the situation has escalated as there have been a lot of migrants that got pushed back by Polish authorities while trying to cross the border.

In response to this situation, multiple residents, activists, and other volunteers spread across the border, in order to support the people seeking asylum. Based on this situation, people started putting on green lights, as a sign for migrants. The green light is supposed to signal the people that they are welcome in their homes.

In my opinion, this article is very newsworthy. It talks about a situation that has been going on for months and no one really knew about it. However, ever since the situation started escalating, more and more people became aware of the dimensions of this dispute between Belarus and the European Union.

Introduction:

Good morning and welcome to the news with Tobi Sadler. Today we are taking a closer look at the effects of climate change, the U.S. economy, and the Morningside Men’s Soccer team.

A Brazilian town being destroyed by the force of the sea.

Atafona is a coastal town of 6,000 people, 200 miles away from the famous Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro. However, unlike the Copacabana, Atafona isn’t famous for its beautiful beaches. The town has a serious problem, due to rising sea levels and the advancing of the Atlantic Ocean.

About 60 years ago, this process started accelerating, and ever since then, the sea has destroyed more than 500 houses. Let’s now listen to the thoughts of Sarah Finn, who is a Biology& Chemistry major here at Morningside: -Sarah Finn Audio-

Since the 1970’s researchers have been trying to figure out the reason for the extreme erosion in the small town. They came to the conclusion that the factors that caused this natural disaster to happen are obviously tied to climate change but are also influenced by certain regional events.

The Inflation rate in the U.S. is going through the roof.

Over the past 12 months, consumer prices rose 6.2 percent. This increase in prices is the fastest one in the past 31 years.

The consumer prices didn’t just rise in certain areas, they rose all across the board. This rapid increase is something that is not welcome for President Biden and his administration. The President pointed out that “everything from a gallon of gas to a loaf of bread costs more, and it’s worrisome, even though wages are going up.”

Many economists expected the inflation rate to be more stable by the end of 2021, but it did the exact opposite. The prices are not just surging in areas disrupted by the pandemic, but they are also doing so in other areas, which increases the risk of higher prices for a longer time. Kai Schwägerl, a finance major at Morningside has this to say about the current inflation: -Kai Schwägerl Audio-

Sooner or later, the federal reserve will have to change its plans. The reserve’s bond-buying program will have to end and interest rates will have to be raised, in order to improve the situation.

Is the Morningside Men’s Soccer team in a crisis?

The Men’s soccer season just ended so it is time to have a quick look at the season.

The team of head coach Tom Maxon only managed to secure the 4th seed in the GPAC regular season. This 4th seed is far below the team’s expectations, as they won the GPAC for two consecutive years.

So, is the Men’s soccer team in a crisis?

Things this year have surely changed for Maxon’s squad. The team is missing both of their starting center backs from last year, as well as one of their key midfielders. On top of that, the team’s number one scorer and last year’s ‘GPAC Offensive Player of the Year’, Okan Gölge is also missing. Head coach Tom Maxon had this to say about this year’s team and the missing players: -Tom Maxon Audio-

Maxon recruited lots of freshmen, but except for one, they all didn’t have the impact that he expected them to have.

This surely wasn’t the season that Maxon or the team expected to have, but it is their duty to come back stronger and prove that they belong to the top of the GPAC Conference.

Masked Men Attacked a Soccer Player. Her Teammate Is Under Arrest.

The article from the N.Y. Times is about an attack on a female soccer player who plays for the French team Paris Saint Germain. However, the interesting part about it isn’t the fact that the player got attacked, but the fact that one of her teammates is under arrest now because of her possible involvement in the attack.

The woman that got attacked, Kheira Hamraoui, drove home with her teammate after a dinner with the team and club officials. In front of Hamraoui’s house, two masked men dragged her out of the car and beat her for several minutes, while her teammate, Aminata Diallo, was restrained in her seat. A couple of days later, Diallo was arrested as a suspect in the case. A French news site suggested that Diallo was involved in the attack to get more playing time. Hamraoui is Diallo’s rival in the midfield and therefore there would be a connection there. The motive of the attack didn’t appear to be robbery, as the two men didn’t take anything from Hamraoui.

This article is very well written as it doesn’t make any assumptions. It is not known if Diallo was really involved in the attack and the article does a good job of portraying that. It states the facts that are known and sticks to that. Nevertheless, the article still manages to tie this case back to a similar attack that happened in the past. In this past case, a female athlete did get arrested for being involved in an attack on one of her teammates. In general, I think that the article is newsworthy as this is something that you don’t hear very often. If the allegations turn out to be true, it would be shocking. Diallo knows that she is a public figure and aside from that, hurting your teammate to get more playing time is something that should never be done.

Every year, the sea advances by nine feet and also rises by as many as 27 feet in some years.

About 60 years ago, this process started accelerating and ever since then, the sea has destroyed more than 500 houses. -Sarah Finn Audio-

National Geographic went to Atafona to talk to some of the residents and about the devastating things that happened in the small town. Multiple people that lived there have been ‘running from the waves’ for their whole life’s. One man that currently lives in Atafona mentioned how he already lost three houses to the rising sea. However, he still lives there.

Since the 1970’s researchers have been trying to figure out the reason for the extreme erosion in the small town. While some locals think that the sea is a living being, and the erosions are a punishment for mistakes that they made, scientists think it’s a mix of multiple things. The factors that caused this natural disaster to happen are obviously tied to climate change, but are also influenced by certain regional events.

Dozens Killed in ISIS Attack on Military Hospital in Afghanistan’s Capital

The article from the N.Y. Times talks about a recent ISIS attack on a Military Hospital in Kabul, Afghanistan.

The attackers in Kabul killed at least 25 people and left more than 12 people injured. According to the article, the hospital was attacked by multiple armed gunmen and at least one suicide bomber. As already mentioned before, the attack was on a military hospital, which was definitely no coincidence. The people being treated in the hospital are a mix of wounded soldiers from the former government and Taliban fighters. At the end of the article, the author also summarizes some facts about the surge in ISIS attacks ever since the Taliban takeover

This article is newsworthy as it shows the consequences of the fall of the Western-backed government. The author did a good job in summarizing the incident and also tying it to the recent Taliban takeover in Afghanistan. The author also did a good job of making the article more authentic by including statements of doctors that were in the hospital during the attack.
