Masked Men Attacked a Soccer Player. Her Teammate Is Under Arrest.

The article from the N.Y. Times is about an attack on a female soccer player who plays for the French team Paris Saint Germain. However, the interesting part about it isn’t the fact that the player got attacked, but the fact that one of her teammates is under arrest now because of her possible involvement in the attack.

The woman that got attacked, Kheira Hamraoui, drove home with her teammate after a dinner with the team and club officials. In front of Hamraoui’s house, two masked men dragged her out of the car and beat her for several minutes, while her teammate, Aminata Diallo, was restrained in her seat. A couple of days later, Diallo was arrested as a suspect in the case. A French news site suggested that Diallo was involved in the attack to get more playing time. Hamraoui is Diallo’s rival in the midfield and therefore there would be a connection there. The motive of the attack didn’t appear to be robbery, as the two men didn’t take anything from Hamraoui.

This article is very well written as it doesn’t make any assumptions. It is not known if Diallo was really involved in the attack and the article does a good job of portraying that. It states the facts that are known and sticks to that. Nevertheless, the article still manages to tie this case back to a similar attack that happened in the past. In this past case, a female athlete did get arrested for being involved in an attack on one of her teammates. In general, I think that the article is newsworthy as this is something that you don’t hear very often. If the allegations turn out to be true, it would be shocking. Diallo knows that she is a public figure and aside from that, hurting your teammate to get more playing time is something that should never be done.

  1. I’d read a Diallo profile. Sounds like it would make a good movie of the week.
How about just a story about soccer culture and this sort of teammate
competition. Does this happen a lot? What drives it? Money? Envy? What
role do coaches and managers have? Do they promote it to get better
    performances?
