Taco Bell Offers Breakfast “Outside the Bun”

TacoBell_Breakfast_sign_300By Kayla Samek—Last year, Taco Bell threw their hat into the ring of fast-food breakfast and this year they added even more options. For college students or just busy people, breakfast is usually not a priority and fast food restaurants have profited the need to get a good meal to start the day. Many fast-food chains have added breakfast menus in order to boost slipping sales (CNN.com). McDonald’s have arguably seen the most success, with the now famous McMuffin breakfast sandwich. Taco Bell offers alternatives to the standard breakfast sandwiches—but can they stand up to a taste test? Being an avid breakfast food fan, I had to investigate. Taco Bell’s attempts at the breakfast market have seen mixed results.

I was skeptical of some of the options at Taco Bell, such as the Waffle Taco, which has not been received too favorably since its release last year. So I tried one of the chain’s newest items: the biscuit taco and two old favorites, the A.M. Crunchwrap and the Cinnabon Delites. The Cinnabon Delites are cinnamon sugar covered, cream-filled donuts holes that are just as amazing as they are simple. They come in packs of four or twelves, but the price is reasonable for both amounts. But, they are only good warm; once they cool down, the cream leaves a metallic after-taste that is off-putting.

The A.M. Crunchwrap is a nice take on a classic breakfast burrito, with layers of textures and flavors that are portable and easy to eat one-handed for people in a hurry. The eggs in the Country Crunchwrap were bland, and that was a common trend in the Biscuit Taco as well. The Bacon ‘n’ Eggs Biscuit taco suffered from unmelted cheese, bland eggs, and a messy delivery system that also happened to be the only good part of the taco: the biscuit. The biscuit shell tasted like a home-made biscuit, but was too soft to function as a taco shell and crumbled. However, with orange juice the price for the meal was a little under ten dollars, and was a nice break from cereal or a McMuffin. Overall, I rate Taco Bell’s breakfast 3 out of 5 stars based on price, taste, and options.
