broken-double-heart-clipart-free-dc-basketcases-picturesBy Dominique Swanson—Nearly every person, whether they like to admit it or not, has a soft spot somewhere inside of them that loves romance movies. It is hard to not enjoy something that speaks to our inner most wants when it comes to a relationship.

Here is a list of the top five romance movies based on the things they teach us.

Coming in at number 5 is ‘Ghost,’ starring one of the 80’s most swoon-worthy men, Patrick Swayze. This movie is about a man that is killed in a mugging, but is allowed to stay on earth as a ghost because of his intense love for his partner. This movie teaches us that even in death, the ones we love most are always with us.

Number 4 is a movie of a little different caliber. ‘Pride and Prejudice’ has many different versions for an audience to choose from. Regardless the story is the same and it is a beautiful one. In a time much simpler than ours, where women were supposed to marry into their place in society, Elizabeth Bennet has caught the eye of the very rich and very proud Mr. Darcy. What seems to be hate at first sight slowly blossoms into an intense love for one another that neither saw coming. This movie teaches us to explore beyond first impressions and reminds us that an old fashioned attitude towards dating is still appreciated in modern times.

This next movie provides an excellent example of the twists and turns that can be thrown at us when it comes to those we love. ‘The Vow’ stars Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams as they deal with a shocking life event. Due to a horrible car accident, McAdams’ character suffers a loss of her most recent memories, including her entire marriage to Tatum’s character. This movie follows their struggles as he tries to win her back over. Their story reminds us that we should spend every day reminding those around us why we love them and work to earn their love in return.

If you love a dreamy Scottish accent and a playful humor in even the worst of situations, then ‘P.S. I Love You’ is the movie for you. Gerrard Butler plays a fun-loving and madly in-love husband in this drama. His wife is left a widow and shortly after finds he has left her a series of messages to follow after his death. We follow Hillary Swank’s character through an emotional roller coaster as she follows the wishes of her late husband. This movie teaches us that even in the worst circumstances, we have a reason to keep moving forward.

Coming in at number one and as the most heart wrenching of the group, ‘If I Stay’ shows us a young girl as she watches her entire life fall to pieces. Losing her entire family in a tragic car accident, Chole Moretz’s character Mia is faced with deciding if she wants to hold on or not. In her outer body experience she watches her family die off and sees the struggle of her boyfriend as he waits for her to wake up. This movie teaches us that there are always others for us to hold on for, and that we can survive the most painful of situations.
