Rick Perry Speaks to Packed Town Hall

indexBy Jordon Heim–On Monday, February 16, Rick Perry spoke to a full UPS auditorium of students and community members in a town hall meeting in the Robert M. Lincoln Center. The former Texas governor and potential 2016 presidential candidate discussed his plans for several hot topic issues like the economy, securing the borders, education, and the states’ right to decide social issues. Other topics he tried to steer away from were the oil pipelines and industrial hemp.

The former Texas governor emphasized his plans for fixing the economy and how he wants to encourage businesses to take risk. He says by taking some risk they will receive a huge return on investment. “I think we’re only a few decisions away from this country really taking off economically,” Perry said.

Perry, who is trailing in the polls behind other potential 2016 Republican nominees, is working on building up some steam to ensure a better outcome from 2012. In that year, he finished with ten percent of the caucus vote.

Perry knows he has what it takes to win the votes in Iowa and promises not to make the same mistakes he made in 2012, “I parachuted in here and didn’t give Iowans an opportunity to get to know who I was and talk to them about the issues.”

The reaction from the crowd included applause for his responses to the hot topic issues and even his remarks at his failed 2012 Presidential attempt, “You better come to Iowa often. I’ve got that figured out.”

Perry’s political action committee, RickPac, recently hired four political operatives in the Hawkeye State over the weekend. The Governor wouldn’t say if he’s running for president, but he did say he would be returning to Iowa very soon.
