Changes Coming to Morningside Student Government

download (1)By Kayla Samek—The Constitution of the Morningside Student Government (SG) underwent major changes in the past couples years, and the most recent election has added more changes.

The newly created position of Director of Communications is now in charge of student groups and organizations. The SG President is now a member of the Alumni board, and the impeachment process is streamlined. These changes are not as extensive as those just recently taken into effect, but are still just as important.

Jackson O’Brien, President of the Morningside SG said these changes are just “minor tweaks” in order to make student government more efficient after the significant overhaul of the Constitution incorporated the fall semester of 2014. These included a pay raise for executives and an increase in job duties. They also created a new position, Director of Communications, held by Lynsay Haverland. This position was given more responsibility as of the recent elections because student organizations have to contact the Director of Communications but have to register with another executive. Now, the Director of Communications handles all student organizations communications and registrations.

Another position given more responsibility is the President of Student Government, who is now a member of the Alumni Board. This creates a two-way stream of information for current students and past students of Morningside. The Senate was also given more power with the ability to start the impeachment process. It has made the impeachment process “more democratic” said O’Brien. While these changes may not directly impact the life of students, it is important to be aware of what goes on in the Student Government.
