By Jordan Heim—Eight students with buzzers in hand, a moderator with a list of questions, and a crew of mass communication students behind the camera is the scene you would see in the MCTV Studios every Tuesday afternoon in January.
Once again, Morningside College is sponsoring the annual high school Quiz Bowl competition in the Sioux City area. This activity is designed to showcase over 200 high school students who excel in a competitive and academic setting.
Rick Wollman, vice president for communications and marketing praises Quiz Bowl by saying, “For many of the high schools students who participate in Quiz Bowl, the program gives them a chance to display their talents, abilities and knowledge in a forum that is not tied to athletics.”
Quiz Bowl doesn’t only just impact the 200 students who participate in it on screen. It also impacts the on the student crew who is involved with the production. There are three Morningside students involved with each of the 15 episodes of Quiz Bowl. Students like Paige Potter, who serves as the director. Potter says that, “Quiz Bowl has helped me gain real world experience by working with the people who make quiz bowl possible.”
Working on Quiz Bowl allows Morningside College mass communication students the opportunity to have the real world experience they wouldn’t get in the classroom.
“Being able to direct and produce something like Quiz Bowl will help someone like me,” said Potter who plans to work in television after graduation in May.
Wollman believes that Morningside College’s sponsorship of Quiz Bowl, “sends the message that Morningside is committed to and supportive of academic excellence—whether it’s at the high school level or the college level.”
Quiz Bowl is shot in the MCTV Studio over a period of five weeks with three episodes shot every Tuesday. The 30-minute episodes will be broadcasted in their entirety on ABC9 KCAU-TV in the spring.
