By Rachel Potter–Coffee plays a large role in students’ lives on the campus of Morningside College. Many could not go a day without drinking coffee.
Students are willing to wait in the long Spoonholder line after class to get coffee because they can’t miss their morning dose of caffeine. It is also convenient to get breakfast while they wait.
Statistics show, nation wide, that 26 percent of daily coffee drinking is by college-aged students. The amount of coffee college students consume is higher around the time of finals. Students have to pull late nights in order to get all of their studying in.
Jackie Mazurek works in The Spoonholder. She knows when classes are over because they are always busy. Once classes begin, they are slow. Jackie said that after working there for so long, she has been able to pick out the regular coffee drinkers.
Dayanera Schealler is a freshman; she loves to get her coffee from Starbucks. She has found out the hard way, however, that it is quite expensive. She estimates spending close to $25 per week.
But Schealler is happy there is a coffee shop in the library. She can use her flex points, so she doesn’t have to spend cash. She said, “I love going to the library now because I get coffee, and I get my school work done!”
Freshmen Hailey Wiseman loves that she can get Starbucks on campus. She thinks she saves money because otherwise she would have to go off campus to buy coffee. Hailey also has a coffee pot in her dorm room; otherwise, she would spend even more money. Wiseman said, “I drink coffee every day because it helps me through my day.”
Mazurek said it was a great idea for Morningside to allow flex points in the coffee shop. She thinks many students buy coffee because of the meal plan they picked. The prices have not increased in a long time, but when they do sales taper off a bit. The regulars still buy their coffee no matter the price increase.
The coffee shop in the library is not always convenient, which is why Schealler has a coffee pot in her dorm room. By having a coffee pot in her room, she can have coffee whenever she wants. She said, “When I wake up at 1:00 am I think it is breakfast time, so I make coffee.”
Schealler believes she got her habit of drinking coffee from her parents. She did not start drinking coffee as early as some kids did. She started once she got in high school. Typically you’ll find student who start drinking coffee once they hit high school or college. They stay up later and get up earlier.
