By Hannah Severson– Sioux City prides itself on its rich culture and history. From the historic courthouse to the Floyd Monument, there are lots of things to do here. Sometimes college students don’t realize that the city actually has a lot of fun and cheap attractions to offer.
The courthouse is the largest publicly owned prairie school building in the world. The craftsmanship that went into this building is so incredible that you have to check it out for yourself. It is located at 620 Douglas Street, and it is pretty hard to miss since it takes up a quarter of the block.
The Floyd Monument was built to commemorate the loss of Sergeant Charles Floyd, the only member of the Louis and Clark expedition to die. It is on Monument Road, only about five minutes away from the Morningside College campus.
Most typical college students here in Sioux City like to spend time at the Southern Hills Mall. From Scheels to Francesca’s Clothing Boutique, there is a good selection of stores. Attached to the mall is one of our three movie theatres.
The other two movie theaters are downtown. One is a regular movie theatre and the other, The Riviera, plays older movies. Downtown is also a great place to go if you don’t know what to do for the day. There are many little, local shops and restaurants on historic Fourth Street. Also downtown there are many bars and the Hard Rock Casino, which is already a big hit after only being opened for a few months.
The Sioux City Public Museum is downtown as well, and it is free to the public. The exhibits are all about the history of Sioux City.
If you are interested in art, then go to the Sioux City Art Center; they always have artwork on display. From now until April they have modern artist Jackson Pollock’s work. If you have kids, they have a cool interactive center for children, but it is also pretty cool for adults too.
We have the Sioux City Musketeers hockey team that play at the Tyson Event Center. Tickets don’t cost very much and who doesn’t love a good hockey game?
If nature is your thing, then in Stone State Park is in North Sioux City. There are great hiking, biking, and horse trails.
Since Halloween is coming up there are a few haunted houses around town. One is on Fourth Street called Scare Central, also known as Fear Factory. If haunted house aren’t your thing, then there are a few pumpkin patches around here as well. Scarecrow Farm is just outside of Sioux City in Lawton. You can pick out pumpkins, go through the corn maze and pick apples.
So if you haven’t been in the Sioux City area for very long or you have been and you think it is pretty boring, well then end that boredom and go check out these places! They are all pretty low cost, (unless you plan on going to the casino and that could be a different story) and you could learn some Sioux City history.
