English Honor Society to Host “Spoken Word Slam”

poetryBy Hannah Hecht–Do you have a poem just bursting out of you? Do you love to explore new worlds through fiction? Do you keep a diary of creative nonfiction? Do you want to win $100?

If you answered “yes,” to any of these questions, you should print off your writings and present them at the Sigma Tau Delta “Spoken Word Slam” on Tuesday, April 1, at 7 p.m. in Buck’s.

This event marks the second Spoken Word Slam of the year for the college’s resident English honor society. In past years, the event has been limited to poetry, but this year, the group has expanded the event to include all creative writing. The honor society hopes that the expansion will draw in people who are interested in all different types of writing, rather than just poetry.

“I went to the Spoken Word Slam last semester, and it was a lot of fun,” said senior Jenna Bowmaster. “It was really cool to hear my peers present their writing.”

Last semester’s slam was a huge success, and the group hopes to draw even more competitors and spectators for the slam on Tuesday.

Senior Sarah Munson plans to compete with a short story she wrote for her English capstone class.

“Anyone who has any level of writing should present at the slam,” said Munson. “They shouldn’t be afraid to compete because it’s a chance to show off your talents and get feedback on your writing.”

Students interested in competing should bring three pieces of original poetry, lyrics, or short story, and be ready to perform. The event is open to the public and there is no entry fee. There is a $100 prize for first place.

Anyone who enjoys literature and doesn’t want to compete is welcome to come enjoy the competition.
