Morningside to welcome Higher Learning Commission

hlc-logoBy Hannah Hecht– On March 17-19th, Morningside will be host to representatives from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). The HLC is a group that assesses colleges across the nation and decides whether or not the college will be accredited. Morningside students should be aware that the representatives might ask them questions on a host of topics such as affordability, curriculum, requirements for graduation, or transfer policies.

“The HLC writes up a self-study report and then visits with faculty, staff, and students to confirm their results,” said Dr. Leslie Werden.

According to Dr. Werden and Nick Brincks, a student member on the steering committee to prepare for the visit, students should answer questions from the HLC representatives honestly.

“And, if you don’t know an answer to one of their questions,” said Brincks, “Just make sure to tell them ‘I don’t know.’ Don’t make something up.”

The steering committee and student government are in the middle of a campaign to raise awareness across campus about what HLC is and what their visit will mean for the college. They are even distributing green HLC t-shirts to be worn on the days of the visit and running a photo contest. Any students can enter the contest by taking a creative picture of him or her wearing the shirt and using their twitter account to tweet at @MorningsideSG. The most creative submission will win $25.
