Spring break means baseball

By Darius Hicks–The Morningside Mustang baseball team looks to enjoy a relaxing spring break in Arizona, as they begin a long road schedule.

The Mustangs will travel to Tucson, Arizona, March 2 as they gear up to compete in the Tucson games. The Mustangs will compete in a total of five games over the course of five days, where they will be facing competition ranging from the NAIA level, Junior College and Division III level.

This is nothing new to the Mustangs, who have faced some of the top competition in the nation in their recent games. “We feel that by playing against some of the best teams will do nothing but make us better. Whether we win or loose, we feel that we gain something by playing the best,” said sophomore infielder Adam Smith.

Morningside has been on the road since the beginning of February, traveling to the Metrodome in Minnesota, managing to gain a record of 3-5. But don’t let the record fool you, the team is playing some good baseball and are a confident bunch headed to Tucson.

“Our record doesn’t show how hard we really play. Yeah we lost five games, but those are five games we had the chance to win. Fix a couple mistakes here and there, and that record is turned around. I feel will have better results in Arizona,” said Smith.

Being no stranger to distractions with so much traveling in recent weeks, players have the task at hand to focus on getting the job done while being in Arizona for spring break. “We just have to remember what were down there for. Coach gives us plenty of opportunities to enjoy ourselves in between games. But we have to make sure we take care of business first, work hard then play hard,” said smith.

The Mustangs begin play on March 3, and will be wrapping up on March 8.
