First Lady reaches out

By Claire DeRoin–

First Lady Michelle Obama assured women that her husband is the best candidate to protect their rights Monday night at the Sioux City Convention Center. Stressing that Barack Obama has fought hard for women’s rights, the First Lady campaigned in Sioux City in the last week of the campaign season.

Mrs. Obama stated that the President was the best choice for women voters. “He’s surrounded by women!” she laughed, referring to herself and the two first daughters, and later mentioning that Barack Obama was raised by his mother and grandmother.

Another hot topic was the economy, and in an attempt to reach out to young people, student loans. “When we were first married,” the First Lady said, “our combined student loan payments totaled more than our mortgage. That’s something you can relate to.”

The entire message was overwhelmingly positive and enthusiastic, and Mrs. Obama often mentioned that she knew how to relate to the average person. The crowd cheered and at one point, broke into a chant of “four more years.”

“Let me stop you,” the First Lady said at one point during the chant. “Eight more days until four more years!”

In addition, Mrs. Obama emphasized that everyone in the audience should get out and vote. Buses were waiting after the event to take people to the Long Lines Center, where early voting was open. If you’ve already voted, the First Lady said, spend your week and Election Day urging others to vote.

“You know that student sitting next to you in chemistry? We all know that kid. Let’s face it- he isn’t going to vote,” the First lady laughed. “Shake him!”

After the event, the First Lady shook hands and took pictures with people in the crowd.
