Pizza eating contest at Buck’s

The grand opening of Buck’s drew a crowd of about 20 people Wednesday evening as 11 Morningside students took part in a pizza-eating contest. Contestants sat along a line of tables in the newly remodeled Buck’s waiting for their pizzas.

The pizza-munchers were: seniors Tyler Omundson and Emma Remy; juniors Pablo de la Cruz, Felicia Reimann, Mitch Jasper, Tyler Figge and Derek Appley; sophomores Nick VandenBerg, Ryan Schlotfeldt, and Bekah Kaiser; and freshman Scott Haas.
Karla Ruby, retail manager for Sodexo at Morningside, was in charge of this event. Karla placed large pizza boxes in front of each contestant. She told them, “You have to have everything out of your box gone and stand up and say Karla rules, and whoever does that first wins!”

Karla and other Sodexo employees told contestants, “Don’t hurt yourselves eating. If you feel like you’re getting sick, stop. It’s just pizza.” Karla and her team placed garage cans around the area just in case anyone ate their pizza too quickly and became sick.

The contest started at 5:05 pm and six minutes later, sophomore Nick VandenBerg won the contest. His prize for winning was getting free pizza from Buck’s for the rest of the school year. Second place went to junior Pablo de la Cruz. He won a gift bag full of a variety of prizes.
