Twitter is a social networking platform that has not, as of yet, enjoyed the kind of widespread understanding and acclaim that has come to websites like Facebook. Many have regarded Twitter as a bastion of celebrity stupidity, a place where Justin Bieber rules. In all actuality, it is a clever and enjoyable medium that keeps an audience’s attention at 140 characters a tweet.
1. Paula Pell, @perlapell
This funny lady is a Saturday Night Live writer who uses her twitter account to dispense jokes in 140 characters.
Sample tweet: The prettier you are the less often you are accused of cutting the cheese.
2. Preschool Gems, @preschoolgems
This twitter account is run by a preschool teacher who tweets the always funny, sometimes surprisingly deep things that kids tell her.
Sample tweet: “Oh Mr. Hat, please keep me safe and warm and free from splinters.”
3. First World Pains, @firstworldpains
Every well-cared for individual has complained about something silly like a faulty dishwasher or a broken smartphone. First World Pains collects all of those complaints in one easy to browse Twitter account.
Sample tweet: My new house has too many stairs to get to the third floor.#firstworldpains
4. Leonard Nimoy, @therealnimoy
The original actor behind the pointy ears has a Twitter account! Leonard Nimoy chats with fans and fellow Star Trek actors. He’s older now, and there is always something endearing about an elderly man using technology. Nimoy also signs his tweets with LLAP (live long and prosper).
Sample tweet: So many people discovering the original Star Trek series. Warms my Vulcan heart.#LLAP
5. Norman N., @oldmansearch
The account bio explains @oldmansearch the best: My dad is 82 years old. I’m teaching him how to use the internet. I told him twitter was how to search things on Google. These tweets are what he’s searching.
Sample tweet: hello ross. recipes with beef jerkey and bananas
These are just the tip of the Twitter iceberg. There are many more accounts that didn’t quite make the cut. Go out and search!
